By Zaheer Mohamed The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) held its Annual General Meeting yesterday at the Chetram Singh Centre of Excellence, LBI, but the election of office bearers was the lone item absent from the agenda. This is because of a pending court matter in which a number of plaintiffs including the GCB have challenged the Cricket Administration Act and certain aspects regarding the constitutionality of the act.
Addressing the media after the AGM, Secretary of the GCB Anand Sanasie said that a motion that came from the OGM in relation to nominations for the positions of the executive committee on the GCB was presented; this was done on October 23 as required by the constitution of the GCB. Sanasie said that the motion which indicated that there was only one nomination for each position was accepted but due to the ongoing court matter, it was ruled that there can be no elections under the act and as a result the election process was not preceded with, therefore those nominations will stand until such time that elections can be held. Sanasie added that after a five-year absence the majority of Berbice clubs including two of their area associations attended the AGM, as well as full delegates from the Essequibo and the Demerara boards. He said that the subject of election is beyond their control since the matter is engaged in the court. βItβs a process where the order clearly states that their have to be a completion of the constitutional challenge to the cricket bill. I canβt say how long it will take but the board is ready to have elections when the process is over,β he added. Despite the court issues, Sanasie stated that the GCB has been trying their best to develop the game locally adding that Guyanaβs cricket has been going places in that the country is being well represented in all forms at the regional level. Sanasie indicated that the clubs in Berbice have approached the GCB with some issues, but while the board have accepted and listened to their concerns, those clubs were told that they need to handle their affairs, adding that the GCB will assist if necessary. He explained that in Demerara the various factions continue to express their challenges but those matters are tied up in the courts so it is beyond their control. When quizzed about Coaching courses, Sanasie explained that the WICB has now move back to the English certification programme and courses will be held shortly. He said that first aid and child protection courses which are a prerequisite to being a certified coach will also be held. The Secretary stated that the local franchise leagues including 50-over, T20 and three-day will continue but the national selection process will be based on cricket that is played through out the year. He informed that the preparation for the Pakistan series in ongoing and they are in the process of finalising a MOU with the WICB.
