GCB U-17 Inter-County 50-over cricket….Demerara, Berbice clinch 1st round wins-Glasgow hits first century at Bourda

Demerara beat Essequibo by 65 runs at Lusignan on the East Coast, while Berbice made an auspicious start to retaining their title when got past the National U-15 select by 115 runs at Bourda in the City yesterday in the opening round of the GCB’s U-17 Inter-County 50 overs tournament.

At Bourda, 16 year-old Man-of-the-Match Seon Glasgow hit nine fours and five sixes in an entertaining 110 from 104 balls and shared in an 84-run stand with the elegant Nigel Deodat, who fashioned a classy 57-ball 50 with just two boundaries.
Opener Fawaz Gafoor contributed 35 from 46 balls with six fours and a six as the defending champions reached 267-9 from 50 overs in sultry conditions on a flat track and sluggish outfield.
Pacer Isai Thorne took 3-30 and Jonathon Rampersaud captured 2-50, while left-arm spinner Zachary Jodah the son of former Guyana Youth batsman Richard Jodah, had 2-36 for the National U-15s who were bowled out for 152.
Berbice began badly when Thorne removed Ricardo Ramdyal (5) and Jevon France (8) in the space of nine runs to leave the score on 29-2.
Berbice’s Seon Glasgow powered his way to the first ton of the tournament and the MOM Award yesterday at Bourda.
Gafoor and Glasgow, playing in his second Inter-County U-17 tournament, got together to take the score to 92 before Rampersaud bowled Gafoor.
Marvin Persaud (10) was bowled by Jodah at 119-4, while Chanderpaul Govindan (6) edged Thorne to Shamar Yearwood for him to take the second of his three catches behind the stumps and Berbice were 145-5.
But the classy Deodat and the pugnacious Glasgow, both former National under-15 players, repaired the damage with an authoritative partnership with Glasgow being the butcher and Deodat the surgeon.
Just after reaching his fifty from 38 balls with five fours and three sixes, Glasgow, from Blairmount, lofted Rampersaud twice to long-off to Renaldo Souten with the fielder catching the ball before overbalancing over the ropes as the umpire signaled six. The next ball Glasgow once wanted to see if Souten could catch; this time the fielders dropped the offering and the ball when into the boundary for four.
While Deodat played some silky cover drives, Glasgow pulled Zeynul Ramsammy for his fifth six to reach his ton which also included eight fours and lasted 99 balls before celebrating the tournament’s first hundred with a brutally hit boundary in the same over.
Glasgow was removed by Ramraj at 229-6 in the 40th over before Mohamed Seeraj (1) fell to Jodah at 235-7.
Deodat, who reached his 50 from 57 balls with two fours and cleverly found the gaps and rotated the strike, fell to Rampersaud at 247-8 before Skipper Shultz saw the total past 250 with an unbeaten 18.
The U-15s were never in run chase despite 32 from Movindra Dindyal and 29 from Rivaldo Phillips. Saif Amoi (3-30), National U-17 pacer Shultz (2-36) and Deodat (2-21) were the architects of destruction for the Berbicians.
At Lusignan, Demerara recovered from a precarious position of 21-5 to reach 143-9 from 50 overs. Andre Seepersaud, who hit 42 with two fours and six, shared in two half-century partnerships with Yeudister Persaud (29) and Niron Bissu (17).
Pacer Sylvain Williams 3-19 from 10 overs, ripped out the Demerara top order, while Sheldon Charles had 3-21 and Badesh Parsotam (2-7) before the lads from Guyana’s largest County were skittled out for 78 in 31.2 overs.
Only Lance Roberts (13), Williams (12), Sheldon Charles (12) and Amer Singh (11) reached double figures in a disappointing batting display on a spin-friendly track and heavy outfield.

Left-arm spinner Hirtitik Singh took 3-27 to follow-up his 17 with the bat to take the Man-of-the Match Award. He was backed by Bissu (3-6) and off-spinner Dwayne Dick (2-8 from 7 overs) to give Demerara an emphatic win.
Earlier, Demerara opted to bat and Sheldon Charles started the slide when he induced West Indies U-16 Captain Sachin Singh (9) to edge a catch to the Keeper at 18-1 before Williams sent back Andra Samaroo (0) and Dwayne Dick (0) in two balls to leave the score on 18-3.
Williams them removed Narindra (8) two runs later at 20-4 and when Charles had another wicket with the score on 21-5, Essequibo were large and in charge in Demerara’s backyard.
However, Seepersaud was joined by Persaud and the pair saw a revival of fortunes for Demerara as they took the score from 21-5 to 72-6 with a sensible 56 run partnership before Persaud was removed.
Seepersaud and Bissu then joined forces in another 56 run stand before Seepersaud was dismissed by Parsotam at 133-7.
Seepersaud’s demise trigged another lower order collapse as three wickets fell for no run before the last pair of Trevor Charles (3*) and Singh (3*) added 10 to take the score 143 when the overs ran out.
The competition continues tomorrow at the same venues with Berbice facing Demerara at Bourda and the U-15s facing Essequibo at Lusignan.
