GCF 2017 Awards…Jamal John, Briton John and David Hicks are cyclists of the year; James Joseph also rewarded

The Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) on Saturday night last at the Windjammer International Hotel and Cuisine, Queen Street, Kitty recognized its outstanding cyclists of the year for a job well done.

The federation also took the opportunity to recognise the historic performance of New York based Masters cyclist James Joseph (60-64 age group) who just over one month ago set a new Flying 200m world record (11:042s) at the UCI World Masters Championships, California. The previous in this event was 11:743s which was set in 2002.
At the event, Joseph who returned to Guyana to accept the GCF award, expressed gratitude to GCF head Horace Burrowes who he commended for staying the course amid many challenges. Joseph also said that he was happy to see the young and talented cyclists holding their own noting that with the correct guidance and a level of stability administratively, Guyana has a bright future.
The proud Guyanese cyclist was also re-united with his long time Coach Hassan Mohamed recounting that the indefatigable Mohamed who was also recognized by the GCF was his Coach some 40-years ago when he attended a UCI Track Championship in Venezuela.
Joseph’s attendance at recent UCI Meets have seen Guyana accumulating points and regaining recognition at the highest level of the sport in the world.
Assistant Racing Secretary of the federation Joseph Briton who chaired the proceedings along with GCF Secretary Maria Leung, stated that the federation is very proud of Joseph not only for placing Guyana on the world map for being a positive role model and standard setter for the young locals.
At the recent World Masters event, Joseph also captured a silver medal in eth Scratch race while he raked in a bronze in the 500m Individual Pursuit. He is the first Guyanese to set a world record at a UCI championship.
Jamal John was the best senior cyclist in the four Points Races that the federation held this year with Briton John taking the Junior class while David Hicks was the top Juvenile with Jonathan Ramshichit as the runner-up. The Veteran cyclist of the year award went to Junior Niles.
Dwayne Gibbs and Warren ‘Forty’ Mac Kay were recognized as Role Model Cyclists; Hassan Mohamed and Joseph Briton for Long and Dedicated Service; The Guyana Police Force – Traffic Department for their continued Committed Service to the sport.
The Kaieteur News and Guyana Times Sports departments were also recognised for their support during the year.
