The Guyana Cancer Foundation brought the curtains down on Breast Cancer awareness month with Female Indoor Football at the National Gymnasium last Tuesday night.

President and Founder of the Guyana Cancer Foundation, Bibi Hassan said 12 years ago she became an Advocate for Cancer with formally Avon Community Help Fund as Treasurer for 10 years.
Hassan, also a certified Beauty Adviser, informed that the Guyana Cancer Foundation was legally registered as a Non-Profit Organization on the 1st June, 2016 and started their screening programme by offering free Mammograms and Sonograms to 100 plus underinsured, and low-income women.
In January 2017, the Cervical Cancer Awareness Month was launched and the Foundation screened 250 women by offering free pap smears.
“After some research, we realised that this was an important project for Guyana because of some of our high risk women in the rural areas. After speaking with Sharir Chan, Chief Operations Officer of Guyana Medical Relief, I convinced him to get Guyana Medical Relief to sponsor 300 women in the rural areas,” said Hassan.
The GCF Head informed that the foundation visited Wiruni Village, Berbice River, Linden, Charity, Bartica, Mahaicony, Moraikobai and Upper Mahaicony River and to date has screened 700 plus women for cervical cancer
“I am very passionate towards this cause because of my own personal experience with my mom who was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer in June, 2008 and is now a cancer free survivor for nine years. She inspired me to help our women to have access to free screening through our Corporate Sponsors,” Hassan stated.
Several activities and events were held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month culminating with Tuesday night event which was attended by several young female footballers and many Cancer survivors including Cricket Commentator and Sports Journalist Sean Devers who survived Brain Cancer.
Also addressing the gathering was MC Affeeze Khan who encouraged those with cancer to remain positive and be motivated by those who had managed to beat it.
“Early detection helps to save lives while physical exercise such as this football event is important for good heath,” the garrulous Khan emphasised.
