Georgetown Children’s Mash competition underway

The National Cultural Centre came alive on Monday with spectacular performances from the Georgetown regional children’s school competition which saw Nursery, Primary and Secondary School students performing Dramatic Poetry and enthralling Calypsos.
The competition is part of Mashramani 2015 activities celebrated under the theme ‘One People One Culture One Celebration’. Over 60 private and public schools registered for entry into the competition.
South Ruimveldt Park Nursery copped first place in the Dramatic Poetry segment at the Nursery level, in the five to seven years group with ‘I Am A Teacher’ performed by Yelena Grandsoult. J.E Burnham Nursery’s Khayoola Whyte came in second with her poem ‘Dis Time of the Year’. Third place was taken by Anais Private School with ‘Indian Child’ done by Chrisanna Cush.
In the Primary school category, age five to seven years, after much anticipation from the crowd, F.E Pollard Primary was adjudged winner with its ‘If I Told You I Was Deaf’ while Green Acres Primary grabbed second with ‘West Indian Style Lovin For Guyana’ and third place went to Bel Air Primary for their rendition of ‘Keep Guyana Clean.’

Meanwhile, in the Calypso Primary School competition aged eight to ten years category, St. Margaret’s Primary won with ‘Happy Republic.’ Second place went to North Georgetown Primary with ‘Fusion,’ and third place, St. Angela’s Primary with ‘Recognise as Guyanese.’
In the Secondary School Calypso competition, in the 14 to 17 years category, Nehemiah Comprehensive copped first place with ‘Pot Pouri,’ while St. John’s College came in second with ‘Yuh Got to Come Back.’ Christ Church Secondary gained third position with ‘Mashramani Time Again.’

In the Dramatic Poetry segment, in the Secondary School category, 14 to 17 years group, St. Joseph’s High copped first place with ‘Birth of a Republic,’ North Ruimveldt Secondary with second position ‘A Guyanese Cook-up’, and third position was given to St. Stanislaus College with ‘Meh Granny Seh’.
The first place winners of the Primary and Secondary competitions will represent Georgetown at the Final competition slated for February 12 to 13 at the National Cultural Centre.
