Sunday, the opening night of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Elite League season three had two matches contested at the Leonora Track and Field Center on the West Bank of Demerara. Reigning Champions, the Guyana Defence Force Football Club were held to draw by ambitious newcomers to the league, Western Tigers. Carlos Adams fired the army men ahead in the 13th minute of the match before Tigers clawed back into the game during the first half through an Andrew Murray Jr. equalizer in 14 minutes later in the 27th minute. Neither of the teams could find the back of the net in the remaining 63 minutes of normal time and they had to settle for a point each. In the league’s opening game, Fruta Conquerors needled New Amsterdam United, another one of the six clubs that has been added to the league, 1-0. It took 78 minutes before Conquerors Ian Alleyne threaded the needle to help earn his tem the full three points. The league continues on Friday with match-day number two at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden with another double header. In the first match that will kick off at 18:00hrs, it will be an all East Coast affair in the “mining town” when Buxton match skills with Ann’s Grove. The final game will feature a third East Coast team in Victoria Kings battling home side Milerock from 20:00hrs. The winners of season three will pocket $5million, $2million will go towards the second-placed team; $1million for the third-placed team and $500,000 for the fourth-placed team. All games will attract a five hundred dollars ($500) entry fee. (Calvin Chapman)
