The Guyana Hockey Board (GHB) has sent out invitations to other Olympic sports disciplines to participate in learning various fun field hockey skills and to play in field hockeyβs newest game format Hockey 5s.
According to a release from the GHB, the event will be staged at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground on the synthetic turf on Shivnarine Chanderpaul Drive, Bourda. The release added that each participating discipline should have a minimum of 5 participants to compete in each of the following categories. 1. Under 13 Mixed 2. Under 16 Boys & Girls 3. Under 19 Boys & Girls 4. Open Men & Women 5. Over 35 Mixed. Giving a background of the sport, in 1908, hockey joined the Olympics and in 2016 FIH recognised Olympic Day by organising various hockey programmes in 40 countries across all continents. Building on the success, this year FIH aims to go even bigger through the support of NAs. The objective is to activate as many NAs as possible to organise Hockey 5s events in their countries on or around June 23. As a true βsport for allβ, hockey matches perfectly with Olympic Day and the format of Hockey5s is easy to organise in informal settings. The aim is to attract new people to share in our love of hockey. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) represents all sports and in the spirit of unity GHB wishes to bring some of the Olympic sports people together to celebrate as well as to showcase the fun and to generate interest in our sport. Participants will be involved in five activities involving various field hockey skills. There will be a competition for each activity for a chance to gain points for your team. After the skill activities there will be round robin hockey 5s games between teams. Prizes will be awarded for each activity. The team with the most points at the end of the day gets to take home the Champion Trophy.
