Give us space to govern -APNU+AFC’s Jennifer Wade

APNU+AFC Regional Member of Parliament for Region #5 Jennifer Wade, delivered a stirring presentation on Tuesday during the ongoing budget debates in the National Assembly. She spared no words or sound effects, as she called out the previous People’s Progressive Party administration out on its “neglect” of the region and its management of the agriculture sector.

Intermittent heckling did not sidetrack the passionate MP who slammed the opposition over what she believes is its premature criticism of the APNU+AFC government.

“Give us space to govern and stop the blame game,” Wade told with the opposition MPs.

She acknowledged the scope for improvement both within Region#5 and across the county but was adamant that the new government must be given the necessary time needed to resolve the issues it inherited when it came to office in May.

“We inherited a mess,” Wade said, much to the disagreement of the opposition MPs.

She spoke of the dilapidated state of several roads in the region and the setbacks that beset the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in its fight against criminal activities.

Her concerns were raised similarly over the last three years, while she participated in the House as an opposition MP.

She defended the sitting Ministers with responsibility for public infrastructure and security and insisted that the current state of affairs were inherited from the previous PPP administration.

Wade boasted that Region #5 was in fact the country’s largest agriculture region but pressed for more support for a region she believes is the backbone of the economy.

She chided the PPP for its failure to engages all stakeholders in the rice industry over its 23 years in government, something the APNU+AFC government has done over its three months.

Ms. Wade assured of the formulation of new strategies to ensure profitability and sustainability and announced an end to victimization, spitefulness and political interference.

“This new government

will take industry forward.”

The Member of Parliament also bemoaned that state of the sugar industry but is confident that her government would resolve the standing issues.  (Kurt Campbell)

I reject the idea of asking for the space to govern. It is by definition the whole space allowed by  the idea of government and that is securely  vested in authority of the executive presidency. Managing that space is useful if one is respectful in the exercise of power. That is contingent on reciprocity and not on a need  for the PPP to be respectful.

Asking for them to be mindful of allocating  space is giving to them the power to allocate what is not in their purview. It is about taking full advantage of authority and the larges of the authority vested in the office of the president.

The APNU need only reflect on the intransigence of the PPP in matters of public disclosure of matters of government their entire regime. Just do what must be done with virtue and integrity for the office as its teleology and tell the PPP to screw itself. If they want inclusion...let them agree to change the constitution to allow it.

“Excited” Jagdeo becomes Leader of the Opposition and promises to work with Government

Former President Bharrat Jagdeo was on Monday afternoon officially elected as the Leader of the Opposition.

He promised to work close with the new government to advance policies and projects that benefit the people of Guyana, once the new government remains faithful to its promises on the campaign trail.

Mr. Jagdeo was elected Leader of the Opposition during a short meeting with members of the Opposition which was chaired by the Speaker and observed by the Clerk of the National Assembly.

During an interview just after the closed-door meeting,

the Opposition Leader said he is “excited”

to return to the National Assembly and

noted that the PPP in opposition

intends to take on a different path

compared to the APNU and AFC in opposition.

Mr. Jagdeo said

“I was truly happy to be out of competitive politics

but since I have made this commitment

and I am back in,

I don’t do things by half measures

but I am starting to feel the excitement of parliament again”.

He said the Opposition under his watch

will move to ensure the government remains

“accountable” to the people of Guyana.

” I have made it clear that we are going

to be a very different opposition than what they were “,

Jagdeo said.

He noted that under the last PPP government,

the APNU+AFC cut the budget

and that affected the state of the economy.

The Opposition Leader said he intends

to push the government to fulfill its elections promises.

“They are now in government and

we are urging them to fulfil

their promises that they made to people,

they can’t come to us and say we didn’t do it

because we did not make those promises in our manifesto.”

Jagdeo challenged the government’s contention

that it met a “bankrupt” treasury

saying that cannot be true,

since the government has presented a larger budget.

Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo

offered congratulations

to the new Opposition Leader

on his election to the new office.
