Glenn Lall abuses Guyana Times journalist

Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall

Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall

Kaieteur News Publisher Glenn Lall verbally abused a reporter attached to the Guyana Times on Friday afternoon. The reporter – name withheld for safety reasons – has since described the experience as a most “disgusting” and “despicable” one.

It was the second such incident in recent days of Lall’s verbal abuse of a Guyana Times reporter. The management of the newspaper plans to lodge a formal complaint with the Guyana Press Association (GPA) and with the Independent Media Association of Guyana (IMAG).

The reporter was tasked with completing a follow-up story on the Police investigations into a complaint Lall had lodged with the Guyana Police Force against Attorney General Anil Nandlall.

In doing so, the reporter was asked to call Lall in an attempt to obtain a comment from the Publisher with respect to statements issued by the Guyana Police Force as part of the investigations into the matter.

However, when contacted, Lall launched a verbal onslaught, including expletives, which the reporter, who was simply doing his job, further described as “downright nasty”.

On a previous occasion, the newspaper Publisher told a Guyana Times journalist over the telephone to “go f**k yourself”.

Lall has been accused of avoiding the Police in the ongoing investigations relating to his illegal recording of a conversation between Senior Reporter at the Kaieteur News Leonard Gildharie and the Attorney General.

Lall subsequently filed a complaint with the Police alleging threats to him and his staff had been made. Police have commenced their probe but say they have been stymied thus far owing to Lall’s and Gildharie’s lack of cooperation.

On Thursday, the Police issued a statement highlighting both Lall’s and Gildharie’s reluctance to cooperate, which Lall denied.

With the law prohibiting recording or tapping of citizens’ private communications, except when so authorised by the Chief-of-Staff of the Army, the Commissioner of Police or the Commissioner General of the Guyana Revenue Authority through a Judge, if found guilty of illegal phone tapping, Lall could be liable to a fine of $5 million and a jail term of up to three years.

On Friday, in another statement, Police urged Lall to turn himself in and abandon his public relations stunt.

Lall, his wife, Bhena, and a remigrant couple are currently before the court facing charges of tax evasion to the tune of some $100 million.

The charges allege that between June 18, 2013 and September 20, 2013, at Lot 200-201 Camp Street, Georgetown, they made and subscribed to false declarations on two Lexus LX 570 motor vehicles to be US$44,158 respectively, contrary to Section 217 (1a) of the Customs Act, Chapter 82:01.

The Lalls are also before the court on another matter relating to allegedly evading paying some $5.7 million in property taxes to the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) for their property at 24 Saffon Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, where the Kaieteur News is located.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Lall’s Attorney, Khemraj Ramjattan was also accused of verbally abusing Senior Editor at the National Communications Network (NCN), Edward Layne.

In a statement, Layne said he attempted to get a comment from the AFC Leader via telephone about why he had not released the evidence he has of three Opposition Members of Parliament being offered $30 million each to vote against the No-Confidence Motion.

Layne said he was “met with extreme hostility. “I proceeded to ask Mr Ramjattan whether his utterances were his official comment, to which he answered in the affirmative and said, ‘You publish what I said, I don’t care what you want to write, boy; look, haul your *ss, what the **ss you think’,” the statement said.

KNews journalist fearful for life

November 2, 2014 | By | Filed Under News

…also questions impartiality of police’s investigation

A senior reporter attached to the Kaieteur News has now expressed concerns over the non existent impartiality of the police to investigate the matter. He has also expressed a fear for his life and that of his family members.
Leonard Gildarie, the reporter now at the centre of the increasing reportage following a phone call from the Attorney General, issued a public statement and cautioned that while he was advised by his attorneys not to make any public pronouncements on the matter said “I am not restrained from expressing deep fears for my safety and that of my family.”

 Senior Journalist, Leonard Gildarie
Gildarie noted too, “I am, also, because of a series of developments, deeply concerned over the (lack of) impartiality of any probe, for a number of reasons.”
According to the reporter, he has seen a number of laughable news reports “that I have been on the run from the police”.

Gildarie by way of his public statement said that “over the week I have been in contact with police officers, including Mr. Kingston from Brickdam (Police Station).”
He went further to say that the said officer “even called me on a phone number that belonged to a family member, strange enough.”
According to Gildarie, he told the police rank that a written statement is being prepared.
“Much to my surprise, they issued a statement Thursday that I am showing reluctance to make contact…On Friday, I delivered a written statement to the Police. Again (yesterday) Saturday, I was present with my lawyer…the police had some additional questions…We are in the process of submitting the answers.”
He expressed his deepest gratitude to the many persons who would have called and lent support over the past few days.

“It has indeed been an extremely challenging period for us…By now, my fellow Guyanese would have learnt of the telephone conversation last Saturday between myself and the Attorney General, Anil Nandlall.”
He observed too that “numerous statements have come from the local NGOs and other international bodies expressing condemnation.”
Contrary to reports that Gildarie was fired from this publication and was on the run from the Police, the statement issued clearly refutes this claim.
In the recorded telephone conversation last Saturday between Gildarie and the Attorney General, Anil Nandlall, and now public audio, Nandlall, while hurling a number of obscenities, conceded knowledge of an imminent attack against Kaieteur News, where the innocent could also be cut down as collateral damage.
Nandlall also confessed to knowing of several power persons who would have become sensitive to the reportage by this publication and even pointed to a family member whom he had to restrain.

Former Minister’s son implicated in Customs fraud

FEBRUARY 19, 2012 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

A former Government Minister’s son who manages a popular Main Street nightspot was reportedly detained and then released on Friday after Customs discovered a significant quantity of Johnny Walker Black Label whisky in a container.
The shipment which was not initially declared was found during a random inspection on a city wharf by Customs.
Kaieteur News understands that Ravi Prashad, son of former Trade and Tourism Minister, Manniram Prashad, was held along with a Customs broker after the discovery.
They were later released. It is unclear what happened to the liquor.
The shipment, according to Customs sources, came in for a company called Top Brandz which would supply liquor to Palm Court, said to be owned by the Prashad family.
It was disclosed that the container was randomly selected by the Customs’ system, called TRIPS, for a 100 per cent check.
While the beer was listed on the Customs documents, the cases of whiskey were not.
Members of the Customs’ Enforcement Unit immediately detained Prashad and the broker.
Customs officials yesterday said that duties and taxes on the liquor would have amounted to millions of dollars.

Two years and what has happened with that case Nehru? The banna was released because he is the son of a Minister and as we all know, ministers are close to God...matter of fact, they are all Gods in their own minds.
