The scheme would make grants directly to civil society organisations (CSOs), including community-based ones and non-governmental organisations, to design and implement projects that will bring environmental and livelihood benefits to communities. The UNDP is providing the funds by donating US$350M which will help to develop 170 Amerindian communities countrywide. Priority is being given to poor and vulnerable communities in the GEF focal areas of biodiversity conservation, climate change, sustainable forest management and prevention of land degradation among others. Delivering the feature address at the launch, Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Mr. Robert Persaud noted that the event is a timely one and will provide a lot of opportunities. He said his ministry and Amerindian communities can expect to grow and develop because of the initiative.

NOT ELIGIBLE

Private sector and private individuals are not eligible but they can play an important role in providing co-financing and in-kind contribution to projects. Three types of undertakings can be funded and the maximum for each is as follows: * planning grants US$5,000; * project grants US$50,000 and * strategic grants US$150,000. Some of those that the SGP would finance are the kind which improves the management of community conservation areas and national protected areas that combine conservation with livelihood activities and that maintain coastal eco-systems. Certain criteria would be used to evaluate proposals and the SGP will operate in a decentralised and country driven manner and, as such, a National Steering Committee (NSC) comprising majority of NGOs membership and expertise in the GEF focal areas has been established. Also present at the launching was Acting UNDP Resident Representative in Guyana, Ms. Chisa Mikami, who made brief remarks. She said the UNDP is very pleased to support Guyana in this way and that projects like these catch the attention of the agency. Interested persons can visit the website sgp.undp.org or local webpage www.facebook.com/SGPGuyana to find more information, especially about the project concepts.
