The founder and CEO of Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill killed himself inside his Bronx factory Saturday, police sources said.

Lowell Hawthorne, 57, shot himself inside the Park Ave. building near E. 173rd St. in Claremont about 5:30 p.m., sources said.

More than a dozen current and former employees stood in disbelief outside the factory hours later. Some had tears rolling down their cheeks.

“He was a good boss, humble and a good businessman,” said Pete Tee, 27, a former employee.

“He never seemed sad. This is just terrible news right now.”

Hawthorne opened the first Golden Krust store on E. Gun Hill Rd. in 1989.

He went on to build the Jamaica beef patty purveyor into a national empire boasting more than 120 restaurants in nine states.

Pat Russo, who has worked with Hawthorne since the 1990s, was confounded by the news that his fellow businessman had taken his own life.

“It doesn't make any sense. He had everything to live for,” said Russo, who is the president of Chef’s Choice food company.

“He was a brilliant business guy. The perfect American success story.”

Hawthorne’s death sent shockwaves from the streets of the Bronx to government offices in Jamaica where Prime Minister Andrew Holness fired off a tweet offering his condolences.

Some of Hawthorne's employees said they suspected something was amiss when they spotted his silver Tesla 85D parked oddly outside the factory. It was left straddling two lanes.

Some of Hawthorne’s employees said they suspected something was amiss when they spotted his car, a silver Tesla 85D, parked oddly outside the factory. The luxury ride was left in the road blocking a lane of traffic.

Longtime employee Everald Woods said he loved working under Hawthorne.

“He was a nice boss, a wonderful guy,” said Woods, an employee since 2003. “He’s the kind of guy you want to work for for that long. He takes care of his employees.”

Family friend Wayne Muschamb said Hawthorne was an inspiration to his countrymen in Jamaica. “Look how far he reached. He’s known from here to Jamaica,” Muschamb said. “I'm kind of lost for words, man. This has got me shocked.”

Hawthorne’s rags-to-riches story was set in motion in 1981 when he followed several relatives to the U.S. from Jamaica in search of opportunity.

He briefly worked as an accountant for the NYPD before deciding to build a business inspired by his father’s bakery back home.

Golden Krust became the first Caribbean-owned business in the U.S. to be granted a franchise license, according to its website.

In 2012, he published “The Baker’s Son: My Life in Business,” a memoir.

“It's a very humbling experience to know that the concept that began in Jamaica with our parents was able to come here,” Hawthorne told the Daily News at the time.

Back in the 90's Lovell and I traveled together to attend a Carib News business conference in Barbados. I did not see him in many years however he was a very decent and humble  guy.

Carib J come in!

Chief

Caribj use to boast about this guy as good black vs bad indo drug business men. I wonder what happened to cause him to take his own life at 57 years old. Also what will happen to the business?

We hardly hear Blacks commit suicide because they're more thick-skinned and tough, so it's surprising to hear about this guy. I wonder what made him do it.

in my line of work , I came across real blacks who’s mom are Punjabi and would heard racist comments from blacks ...

I have a few mixed friends and they told me that some Blacks are cold to them because they are seen as outsiders by not being 100 percent black. I wonder if Carib is one of those Blacks who hate mixed people.

Some Jamaican blacks have east Indian blood in them. They are known as cooliee royals in Jamaica.

Just got off the phone with two of my Jamaican brothers who are heavily involved with doing charitable work in Jamaica. They are as devastated as all of us. They met with Lovell on November 10th at his foundation dinner. He was always so giving to his community and beyond.

Condolences, may his soul rest in peace.   What an inspiring story of how he left his accountant job to build his own Empire.  Depression has nothing to do with race.  Must be tough for the family around the holiday season to have such a tragedy.

My understanding is a close-knit family as well with the big son being an attorney.

Alena did you ever meet him in person?

I just learnt about the fella from your post.   Golden Krust seem to be quite popular, had no idea it was owned by a person from the Caribbean.

Okay.

Jamaica-born American businessman Lowell Hawthorne lived a story of achievement over adversity in the establishment and growth of his restaurant chain, Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery and Grill.

Hawthorne, who migrated to the United States in 1981, shot and killed himself at his New York office on Saturday.

Here are 10 things about Hawthorne’s rise in business since he and seven other siblings left Jamaica 36 years ago to join their oldest sister in America in a tough economic climate for restaurant businesses:

1. Hawthorne was an accountant by profession with the New York Police Department.

2. He went to the United States in 1981 with a dream to do the same kind of business that his parents ran in Jamaica for decades.

3. He took his father’s recipe for making delicious patties and started the first business in the Bronx in 1989.

4. Hawthorne convinced his siblings to pull equity out of their homes and deplete their savings to invest over $107,000 in Golden Krust Bakery as a family business.

5. Between 1989 and 1993, he opened 17 stores under the brand as the largest Caribbean chain in the United States.

6. In 1995 he got the license to operate as a franchiser in New York, becoming one of the first Jamaicans to do so. Most of the stores were being operated by franchisees who invested a combined US$24 million.

7. Golden Krust now operates in 120 locations in nine states.

8. In 2000 Hawthorne was named New York City Entrepreneur of the year

9. Every year, he awarded two scholarships in Jamaica and one to a college-bound student in New York in tribute to his mother. On November 28, he posted on Facebook: “I was always in search of the next honest means to make a dollar. Like many transplanted Caribbean nationals, I struggled to work and raise a family. I can only thank God for everything I have achieved. If my story here can inspire other to rise up and give it a go, I would have accomplished something meaningful.”

10. Hawthorne is survived by four children and his widow, Lorna.

I came on to this thread to see what moronic and racist nonsense druggie will come up with.  Druggie the man was featured in many prestigious US financial media, the WSJ, Fortune, Crains etc.

Please post articles about yourself there or just shut the fk up!

No need to discuss an honorable role model of Caribbean success on this anti black hate filled site. As you can see druggie is once again on his anti black rampage.

I deliberately did not come to this site until I knew that druggie would show up and he didn't disappoint.

Richmond Hill is an area that is controlled by the Bonano crime family that also controls Montreal Canada and the Gambino crime family. Do your research Vish. Every criminal in this area pays his or her cut to the mob or else trouble starts.

The Mafia still run things in New York. No other criminal enterprise has the organization that they do. Every criminal pays a cut one way or another to the mob in New York. Instead of bashing Prashad as an ediot Vish needs to do his research. Read the cases about garbage collection in New York, read the cases involving the history of the shake down of bakeries in New York, read about the history of mob tax on certain food items, windows and concrete in New York.

That is what the mob wants you to think.

His accomplishments in business is very impressive.  We Guyanese can learn from this man.  Perhaps someone from our community to can think of something to sell that can produce massive amounts of revenues like the Jamaican patties.

He had that in liens.  His liability might have been higher.

Looks like Lowell was a tax evader and a bit crooked with his employees but he should have hired an expert lawyer instead of taking his life. There appears to be more to this story than what is being reported.

FM

Lowell should have cashed out. He had several restaurant locations and a good frozen food business.  He could have IPO the business on a medium size stock exchange and cash out or get a hedge fund to buy him out and start over again or split the restaurant side from the frozen food business and sell one to settle tax debts/lawsuits.

Prashad
Prashad posted:

  He could have IPO

Hardly likely.  The hedge fund and PE guys have known him for quite a while and in fact funded much of his expansion.

To do all of this means giving up control and those who start family businesses don't want to do this. I don't see white PE guys interested in running a Jamaican patty chain.

As to activities that got him into trouble.  I suggest that folks check how most low margin mid sized businesses operate in NYC.  High costs, high taxation, etc., something will give and its usually taxes and the workers. The NYS Dept. of Labor is very busy dealing with these issues.
