Gov’t now providing free transportation at Stabroek Bus Park

September 15, 2014 2:03 pm Category:

Minibus[www.inewsguyana.com] – The Ministry of Public Works has implemented a free public transportation system at the Stabroek Market bus park; a move seen as a response to the cry of the commuting public.

In a statement issued today, the Ministry said the implementation of the free transportation system was in an effort “to alleviate the long wait citizens endure on a daily basis.” The initiative began on Saturday last (September 13).

Some four 44-seater buses are working and will provide service to various routes.

Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, will be meeting with the contractors of the buses this afternoonat the bus park.

Citizens in recent time have complained bitterly of the exorbitant fares that are at times demanded at peak hours, particularly from the Zones 32 (Georgetown to Parika) and the Zone 31 (Georgetown to Patentia) operators.

In frustration, citizens had mounted calls for the administration to provide transportation or at the least move to ensure they are protected by structuring the fares.

The Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce has issued a statement warning against any attempt to exploit and impose hardship on the commuting public.

The clean up campaign and free transportation for commuters should continue. Both areas are very necessary for our country and people. A little kindness goes a long way.
