…supportive of independent probe in Harding’s allegations

Head of State, Donald Ramotar, is supportive of an independent probe of the allegations of Colwyn Harding, who is maintaining that he was sodomized by a policeman using a baton covered with a condom.

But Ramotar did decry what he called the irresponsible reporting by some sections of the media, insinuating that the implicated rank was being ‘hanged’ even before he was afforded a trial.
“Let me say upfront that this government is against any kind of torture but at the same time, I don’t believe that you hang people even before they are listened to.”
Ramotar was at the time speaking at his office, where he hosted his first media briefing for 2014.
The Head of State also questioned the political motives of the various sentiments that are being generated in the heated public debate.
“A lot of what is taking place is not being based on looking at the facts or waiting on the results of the investigation.”
Ramotar told members of the media that a lot of the comments being made are by persons “trying to instigate a lot of negative things in our society.”
In responding to questions from reporters, the President maintained that he would be ready for “any type of investigation.”............

Imagine that! for a government that is against torture it is amazing they were silent against the beating of an amerind woman and her child by one of their agents. Further why does it happen so often? And what have they done to any of the numerous cases of torture to date?
