[www.inewsguyana.com] – Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon on Tuesday (December 31) while reflecting on 2013 said it was a successive year, maintaining eight years of consecutive growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Guyana is reported to have recorded an almost five percent economic growth in 2013.

The HPS said this was particularly due to prudent management and application of sound macroeconomic fundamentals.

According to Dr. Luncheon, the productive sector contributed significantly to the growth recorded and the increase in GDP. He added that the record production in rice and declaration in gold was also worthy notes to be made regarding 2013.

He assured that the distribution of this wealth has been fair, despite contrary reports by the opposition. Testimony to this distribution Dr. Luncheon noted is the improvements in the social sector. He said also that the distribution of wealth is also evident in the welfare sector with provisions made for the lesser fortunate.

The Government’s Spokesman also boasted of improvements in the Educational, Health, Security, Housing and Social Security Sectors. All of this he believes is a direct result of having the ‘best’ budget presented in years in 2013.

He said that while the year was successful there were also several noteworthy disappointments. He agreed with popular public sentiments that the National Assembly/Tenth Parliament has been a disaster so far.

According to Dr. Luncheon the House failed to live up to all expectations.

Nonetheless, the HPS told reporters that the Administration will recommit in 2014 to the Guyanese people to meeting all expectations at all possible levels.

He vowed also to repair what he said was the damage the National Assembly caused in 2013.

Guyana will have to deal with declining gold prices soon. Rice is a huge growth area. There is a construction boom that's helping the local materials sector. The services sector is growing. What's missing is a real springboard for sustainable economic growth - the workforce skills. There is a structural imbalance that churns out computer programmers but no IT sector development. The telco firesale by Hoyte is over and bandwidth spectrum is given out in a less than transparent manner. We have no light manufacturing on the scale of Trinidad's. Who are we kidding about the economic growth rate when the working class and middle class savings rate is pathetically low; where income growth is below what it takes to sustain local demand and investments.

these fools will buy anything the PPP sells. It is clear to any with an ounce of economic sense that GDP means little in terms of quality of life to the people in general. Southern China is a good example. Despite years of 10% growth quality of life has been degraded as only a few gets the money. In Guyana, the disparity between those earning the money mile bobby et al is obscene. Poor people still make an average of 2500 a year and Ramotar's kid earns some 15K a month by some reports

Why is the government basking in glory of the growth in the private sector?? It has nothing to do with government employees, production efficiency or investments.

Gold export - private

Timber export - private

Rice export - private

The PPP stealing someone else' crown to proclaim itself champion. Only in the drugs trade has the PPP regime got the dubious honour to be proud of the growth.

The government own publicly owned businesses are failing left right, and centre.

Cane harvest - poor

Electricity supply - poor

Water supply - poor

Public transport - poor

Road building and maintenance - poor

These are not things for the PPP to glorify.
