Govt not vacating Infectious Disease facility

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo on  Friday said the owner of Ocean View International Hotel, which has been converted into an Infectious Disease Hospital, is unlikely to regain possession of his building in the immediate future.

“I must say that he’ll have a long wait,”  said Mr. Jagdeo in reference to the owner of the seaside building at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown.

Addressing his first news conference as Vice President, Mr Jagdeo said his now two-week old People’s Progressive Party (PPP)-led administration has unearthed “a lot of irregularities” which would have to be investigated.

The owner of the former hotel, Jacob Rambarran, at the change of government, issued a demand for GYD$65 million in rent for the past five months in keeping with a lease Mr. Rambarran has said the gazetted  order for compulsory acquisition has no force. He asked the government to vacate the building if it would not pay the rent of GYD$13 million per month.

The Vice President, however, said government would not be vacating the premises because GYD$1.6 billion of public monies were used on the building. He said health officials were cautious about seriously ill  COVID-19 patients being housed there because the building had fungus.

Mr. Jagdeo questioned how Mr. Rambarran was unaware that there was no actual lease agreement.

Attorney General Anil Nandlall has also acknowledged that the gazetted order only marked the start of the process.

Mr. Jagdeo bemoaned the spending of GYD$1.6 billion on remodeling and rehabilitating the Ocean View International Hotel because it is private property.

Then President David Granger had officially commissioned the health facility one week before he was declared the loser of the March 2, 2020 elections.

What was all the hullabaloo about the building ?

That the Granger crew wasted a lot of money on a disaster. Now Rambarran think the PPP is like the incompetent Granger crew so he wrote to them demanding payment for a dis-functional piece of property. He isn't getting any money anytime soon nor is he getting back the building unless he repays the $1.6B already dumped into it.

All that has been done with the $1.6B is fix up the shell of the building. There are no medical equipment yet and when Lawrence was asked about that as well as the detail about the $1.6B already spent she said that the Ministry of Finance has that information. The new MOH who is a medical doctor said that it is a disaster. I have no reason to disagree with him.

Too early for Dr. Anthony to worry about cookie points. He is entrenched for the next 5 years. Secondly, the PPP made it crystal clear that they had no intention of collaborating with an illegal de-facto government and they kept that objective. However, I am curious about this invite from the Coalition. Please provide the backup for that invite.

Are you judge and jury?  Do you know the nature of the contract Mr. Rambarran has with the government?

Rambarran never spoke about the government owing him any money until after the PPP took over but that is their mistake. The PPP are not incompetent.

The PPP is mostly incompetent.  That is why Jagdeo lords over them.  "In blind man country one eye man a king".

Do you know the nature of the contract? The answer is Yes or No. If Yes, prove it. If no,  who cares about your opinon.

Shouldn’t be a mystery. File a lawsuit against the Govt. The contract will stand regardless of what Jagdeo says.  So just do it and prove him wrong.

This deal between the illegal coalition gov't. and Rambarran is similar to the pharmaceutical deal with the infamous Larry Singh - gov't. paid for the building and have to pay rents too plus there is nothing in it.

That is why Jagdeo said yesterday that the circumstances surrounding this building and the Coalition seems incestuous. Thankfully he cautioned Rambarran that he will have to wait very long for that payment he is seeking. It was pointed out that the building is in receivership so Rambarran technically doesn't even own it which could make his letter to the PPP fraudulent. Even Granger's people said that the building is in receivership.

Does GNI now have a new snake oil salesman ? Imagine PNC spent $ 1.6 Billion on a fungus infected building ?

Real PNC cake shop mentality.
