The Guyana Police Force (GPF) as part of its 176th anniversary, this morning staged grand route march that saw participation from all arms of the force. This activity which is an annual part of the Force’s celebration also saw the participation of the Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, who took the salute in front of the Ministry’s Brickdam office.

The parade started from Police Headquarters and moved east into Young Street, south into Parade Street, east into Lamaha Street, south into Waterloo Street, east into Regent Street, south into Camp Street, west into Brickdam, north into Avenue of Republic, east into Church Street, north into Camp Street, west into Young Street, and north into Police Headquarters.

This year’s parade was deemed one of the largest that the force has ever had, according to Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud. The Commissioner in his remarks thanked the officers for the good work they have been doing especially during the election period. He pointed out that it is a crucial time for a country and without proper surveillance could prove very dangerous.

He added that the new administration has indicated a lot of changes for the force; “these changes say to me that we will be resourced, we will have the tools that are necessary for us to do our jobs, that our welfare will be looked at…however there will be a greater demand on us for accountability and improved delivery of services,” he stated.

Persaud also urged the officers to do their best and serve the force with pride, which will in turn restore its good name.  To this effect, he said that standard operational procedures were developed and a lot of officers were trained in order to deliver the quality of service that the people expect.

He also emphasised that rogue cops must go stating that, “We have to get rid of those who damage the image of the force.” He also encouraged the officers to stay away from such cops and to report them.

In closing, the commissioner pointed out that a lot of activities are on schedule for the month’s celebration and “he can see a brighter future” for the force.  END

If I had my way I would introduce a law banning the police forces of every ex British Caribbean country from engaging in marches and other ceremonial activity.

From The Bahamas, to Jamaica, St Kitts, St Lucia, Trinidad and on to Guyana innocent lives are being ended, and people live in fear in their homes and places of business.........this while our police play toy soldiers.

I am sure that Guyanese would rather hear about major upgrades in the quality of the police force and in policing strategies, than seeing them engage in useless drilling.

But the old grumps can sleep happily knowing that they are reducing the ability of the youth to have fun!
