No unlawful action should be taken against law-abiding citizens – Granger urges police, army

STABROEK NEWS, NOV 13 --- Leader of the Opposition, David Granger has called on the heads of the police force and army not to allow their forces to be drawn into “unlawful actions” against law-abiding citizens.

The statement today came on the eve of a rally by APNU and the AFC set for tomorrow at the Square of the Revolution and what Granger said was signs of stepped up training by the police force in the city.

Granger’s statement follows:

Brigadier David Granger, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, has called on Brigadier Mark Phillips, the Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Seelall Persaud, Commissioner of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), not to allow members of their respective services to be drawn into any unlawful actions against law-abiding citizens.

The Opposition Leader said that A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) has announced that it will launch a series of lawful and peaceful ‘Pro-democracy’ protests to raise public awareness over the President’s prorogation of Parliament on Monday 10th November. APNU has been concerned and dismayed at newspaper reports that there has been sudden, heightened training by members of the Police Force in Georgetown under the Command of Senior Superintendent, Clifton Hicken.

APNU reminds the Chief of Staff and Commissioner of Police that the Constitution of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, at Article 147, protects a citizen’s right to:

“… freedom of assembly, association and freedom to demonstrate peacefully, that [is] to say, his or her right to assemble freely, to demonstrate peacefully and to associate with other persons and in particular to form or belong to political parties, trade unions or other associations for the protection of his or her interests.”

rigadier Granger calls on officers and members of the GDF and GPF not to be swayed by perverse political directives aimed at provoking a disturbance of the peace or causing injury to innocent individuals. All members of the Defence Forces and Disciplined Services are required to behave in a professional manner in the performance of their duties. They are to ensure that the law is enforced and the Constitution is upheld.

I AGREE with Mr Granger. People MUST be allowed to protest peacefully. The SEcurity Forces ned to have Cameras in every part so IF anyone misbehaves and therefore his/her act becomes Unlawful and the Police need to ACT, it will be on Tape. Protest PEACEFULLY and their is nothing to worry about.

Agreed. It looks like Granger knows that the Opposition supporters will cause trouble and hurt people tomorrow and does not want the GPF and GDF to intervene and  enforce law and order. If they do and the opposition supporters gets injured he will lay the blame squarely on the GPF and GDF. There is a need for aerial as well as ground videos to be taken. The media can assist in taking their own videos.

Glen Lall is NOT interested in the Police Welfare and for JUSTICE. He has his own way of doing business

Who the hell is Granger to tell the security forces how to do their job? Do they tell him how to do his job? Is he suggesting that the security forces will provoke a disturbance and then act first to beat up the opposition supporters? Is he suggesting that what happened at Sophia during his leadership review, when people were asserting their rights and shots were fired, where he blamed those who were opposed to his rigging the election for causing trouble?

Granger is a JOKER. At his Party Conference GUNS were fired. Does he expect the GPF to think ANGELS coming tomorrow???

He knows that the PPP is planning to pay insiigators to cause violence as an excuse to mow down black people.

This is why the AFC has to have Indians in the march to head off such a plot.

The police shot down Lindeners in cold blood, fired tear gas at old women and children in a peaceful protest after the last election.

The GDF and GPF have been put on warning that any attempt to brutalize black people will not pass unnoticed.

Now you all Indo racists can chat amongst yourself while you attempt to continue to have orgasms over the spilling of black people's blood.

I will bully myself on this thread hoping the poster don't mind. I have a problem with this issue when a leader warns the discipline force of unlawful action even before hand, it's a slap in the face for every officer that would be out there tomorrow to safeguard innocent people, children, public and private property from destruction. If Mr. Granger had confidence of his people, he would never made that remark. Granger must control his people and take full responsibility for any illegal actions committed by them. If his intention is to create conflict with the law enforcement officers and his public arrogance, then he should remember is will not be another Linden or Agricola riots. The police will perform their duties in peaceful manner as long as the crowd abide by the law. Peace out!

Having regard to how paid PPP thugs infiltrated past PNC demonstrations, Granger is in order to caution his former colleagues in the armed forces.

Some of those thugs had boasted openly how they were each paid $5000 to beat up Indians and loot stores so that the PNC would be blamed.

Tomorrow's rally is expected to draw a mammoth crowd. It will be addressed by APNU and AFC leaders. They are expected to tell the people to continue demonstrating until de facto dictator Ramotar ends his unwarranted prorogation and provocation.

David Granger and others justifiably expect that Rohee will send paid hooligans again to mix among APNU and AFC participants in the rally and future demos.

You will note that this is the same GDF who used to beat up PPP supporters 4 0 years ago, and not so long ago was harassing fishermen on the Essequibo River, with allegations of a murder or two for those who didn't pay up.  In the interior they continue to harass the miners and the Amerindians as they did 40 years ago.

But you are fine with that.

The ENTIRE opposition in FULL display showing DIVERSE ETHNICITY, and not merely a 95% black crowd with a few token Indians.  Because the PPP will gladly mow those down.

Yes it is the PPP supporters who kill themselves.  Not the APNU supporters, who run mad instead.  Different response to stress I guess.

Finding out the differences will be worth examining, both from the point of view of reducing suicides, and of improving the mental health of the population.

Dutty Leela Sase, you organize any death squad yet? What's the composition of races involved? When you plan to unleash the war dogs?

I wasn't there. I could not prove that beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. It was black on black violence. Maybe it was drug turf wars.
