Granger hails Hoyte as ‘Champion of Change’

-cites undermining by ‘dissidents’

Desmond Hoyte

Eighteen years after his death, former President Desmond Hoyte has been hailed as a “Champion of Change” by the current leader of his party, former President David Granger.

Hoyte who led Guyana from 1985 to 1992 is best remembered for the Economic Recovery Programme which had as its objectives the restoration of economic growth, incorporation of the parallel economy into the official economy, the elimination of external and internal payments imbalances, and the normalization of Guyana’s financial relations with its foreign creditors.

During his leadership of the party from 1985-2002 the People’s National Congress (PNC) also became the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR)

Mr. Stevens former chief engineer of Greco told Prashad an interesting story.  He was running a business setting up TV boxes for Viera TV in the 1980s. Viera had a monthly paid subscription service for American TV whose signals passed over Guyana but you could have bought Stevens box and antenna and get the Viera TV signal for free.  One day Hoyte's wife called Stevens to put up an antenna and tv box at Hoyte House. When Hoyte's daughters came home from school they were so excited to watch American TV.  When Hoyte arrived home and saw Stevens in his yard then he saw the antenna on his house roof.  He asked Stevens what he is doing there. Stevens told Hoyte that he set up a tv box to catch Viera's TV signal.  Hoyte started to shout.  Get it down and out.  I want no part of it.  Viera is running an illegal service and I want no part of it. Stevens had to pull down the antenna and pull out the box and take it away.  Stevens said you should have seen the looks on Hoyte's wife and daughters' face.  They look vex bad but they did not say anything.

Prashad cannot remember the exact year but early 1980s it was when Stevens had his tv box business and Viera had his monthly subscription tv business.

Early 80's? Both of Hoyte's daughters died in a car crash in 1985.

There is a story that one of Hoyte's daughters was in love with an Indian lad and they would have announced their engagement. But tragedy struck.

If that were true, I would bet it was Maxine.

This could be true and I know the guy.  I don't know what kind of friendship they had but I know that the young man was friendly with one of Pres. Hoyte's daughters. How do I know?  Mr. Hoyte told me.

I met Mr. Hoyte once at a funeral at St. George's Cathedral.

Jagan and him might have steered Guyana on a better course.

Hoyte was a free market advocate and a democratic thinking person. He needed Burnham's crooked schemes to guarnatee him the assurances of being the President of the changes he had visioned for Guyana. Hoyte would amend his policies as the Guyanese society evolved.

Jagans, already had a preconcieved vision of what Guyana should be like. They were hardened communist. Democracy would be denied in Guyana had it not been for the Americans constant surveilances. They would have used the Stalinist big booths and stamped out Indo racist attitudes towards blacks. Indians would not have faired so well, they would have hated his regime just as they hated Burnham. Refusal to embrace the PPP values of the new society. We have seen several times the Jagans forgiving attitudes towards blacks who have been openly critical of them. For much less, Indians were marked for life by the Jagans, never again to be accepted as decent individuals, branded as racist and opportunistic.

The scorn of even the PPP today.

The PNC continues to be an ass, this empowers Jagdeo to mold the new group of Indoes as the Third Reich of Germany. The red shirts men and wimen of Guyana.

Who would like to be under communism. Indian Business people knew where he was going. Dem was smart ppl.

Justice? The man had the police hunt down criminals and hung them. So admired, he was named Desmond Persaud.

We see bullyism in the PPP, that is all Guynaese knows-bullyism. Black ppl can be bullies too.

Hoyte hanged a black man for killing a Chinese man in a home robbery. The man said I pull out my knife and juke the Chinee man when he wake up. Hoyte hanged him high. Hoyte was a no nonsense man. That is why he and the anti koolie serial Greene could not get along.

Yes, the Jagans were communists.  However, Cheddi Jagan was committed to democratic ideals.  Democracy was always safe in Cheddi's hands.  He was above everything else a decent human being.  Communism was his ideology--he saw the world, especially the economic world, from a classist perspective. IMHO, he was an ideal leader.

Communist have only one allegiance, to Moscow. He spent his early political career pursuing the communist model for Guyana. Cheddie, a democratic thinking person, that is unbelievable. The gentleman never practiced it. I do not know if he ever talked about the practice of it. The closest thing to democracy for him was a National Front Government. He talked about that but never follow through with it. Just as constitutional amendments.

It is not true that communists have/had "only one allegiance, to Moscow". That is CIA propaganda.  Communism is an ideology, a way of analyzing the world.  What does that have to Moscow or Beijing?  Yes, the USSR and China were communist countries but they no longer are.  I knew and worked with and for Cheddi Jagan.  He was committed to democratic ideals.  In fact, he spent much of life fighting for democracy in Guyana and globally.  The Americans and British with their lackeys in Guyana rigged elections, from 1968-1992,  to deny Cheddi Jagan his rightful place as PM/President.  Jagan patiently waited them out and won convincingly on Oct. 5, 1992.  If anyone reading this could identify a single undemocratic action attributable to Cheddi post it and I will respond.

Hoyte was a no-nonsense man when it came to corruption and racism.  He almost took Brotherson's head off with a stone ashtray that he had in his office when he found out that Brotherson was going around and saying that the General Secretary of the party Chandisingh was racist.  Brotherson was so terrified that he ran straight into the waiting arms of Mama Janet J. Hoyte almost crucified Justice Barnwell when Claudette Labennette went to him and complain about Barnwell's corruption.  But Hoyte caused George Daniels President of the TUC to go into exile in the USA.  Also, he fired Yesu Persaud from the cardboard making company when Yesu joined Guard.

I think the CIA and MI5 had enough evidence to arrive at the conclusion he was not trustworthy to be the leader of country in the Western Hemisphere. CBJ spent most of his travelling time to Communist countries, one does not see democratic principles at work in those places. CBJ never practiced democracy in anything he had complete control of.

The Governor stated in his White Paper all the Communist undertakings of the Jagans when he announced the suspension of the 1953 constitution.

CBJ and his 1953 cabinet behaved as subversives, wearing Stalin photograph everywhere. Doan you think action speaks louder than words.

Uh, those in power in the UK didn't think that Cheddi was really a Communist and told the Americans so! However, when he started encouraging links with Cuba, I thought he was courting trouble with the US! I stopped supporting him then! Who the fk wants a war with the US and Cuba in Guyana when the Vietnam war was going on then and Moscow and Peking a long way from Guyana? Castro was the 20th century Don Quixote and Cheddi a Pancho idiot! Fing idealists!

I don't take the word of the CIA and MI5 as gospel.  It is true that Cheddi travelled to Communist countries etc. but he also travelled to India, the USA, Britain etc.  You still haven't given a real example of an undemocratic action that Cheddi took.  Yes, action speaks louder than words so give me an example that I can respond to.  Cheddi Jagan was the most caring politician one could ever wish for--his prime purpose was always the interests of the poor, weak and exploited.  He didn't accumulate wealth and when he died even his house was donated either to the PPP or the State.

Cheddi J told Prashad in 1990 that the reason communism was collapsing in Eastern Europe was that it was communism by the Red Army. He said that eventually, the hold world will be communist.

Yeah? Think again! The Covid19 is taking care of that! More to come! Beware of the 'vaccine', especially if it is made compulsory! Maybe then you people will believe me! But it might be too late! Communism, or rather socialism, is needed when the demand is too much for the supply! That is, too many people demanding more than is available! So, let us all starve equally! Trump saw this clearly! Beware of Biden who is part of the Globalists and their New World Order! Read that as the Zionism of the Israeli Jews and those who support their aims!

He caused the Split by not abiding with the Congress of 1955, that is undemocratic.

He allowed others to help themselves to bribery from the impoverished.

He was undemocratic to those who had differeing opinions.

A visionless person always find refuge in causes, yet does nothing to bring about changes. Changes require scarifices in principles, beliefs and sometimes even relinquishing power for the better.

He was a man who recieved what he needed. That is better than money.

Let me say this, I do not dislike the man. However, he is not analyzed properly. He is given a free pass because he was removed from the government. He failed in not realizing the the country was a colony of Britian. He wanted to pluck it from them before they ready to give it up.

In 1953 the PPP had moderates and extremists and he was one of the extremists. The choice of his Ministers were from the extremists faction, many head of trade unions. Their willingness to sow havoc by calling for country wide strikes was not to be permitted by the Crown. Imagine a government calling in chaos, that is undemocratic. And to think Ministers who were representatives of Her Majesty's government.

What did Nehru tell him when he visited India. My feeling is Nehru would not touch him with a ten foot pole. Nehru knew what he stood for. Gandhi said, do not let us not hate the English, in the end we will need them. Only CBJ did not want the English, because he had the Kremlin. Even Nkrumah, Kenyata, Baliwa and Bustamamnte, Barrows and Gary wanted the English.

Dr. Cheedie B. Jagan never cared enough about Guyana, If he really did, in 1992 victory he would have turned the tide we are in today. Instead, he fired everybody, closed up programmes and institutions. Those are not democratic acts, it is acts of vindictiveness.

And how would one really knows the thoughts of another person. Kennedy had him pegged correctly. CBJ was exposed in the Krelin, White Hall and the Oval Office. Everybody had inteeligence on him.
