Granger signals election petition -says GECOM has to proceed with declaration

President David Granger today signalled that an election petition will be filed, a likely sign that APNU+AFC has accepted that GECOM’s declaration will be the result recount which shows a win for the PPP/C.

A statement from the Ministry of the Presidency follows:

President David Granger, this morning, received a call from the Chairman of the Elections Commission, Justice (Ret’d) Claudette Singh who invited him to a conversation with Opposition Leader Mr. Bharrat Jagdeo to discuss the way forward.

The President explained that he had no objection to speaking with Mr. Jagdeo but as far as a proposed declaration is concerned, he recognised that the Commission has a legal obligation as a result of the recent ruling of the Court of Appeal, to proceed with a declaration.

President Granger said that notwithstanding that declaration, the APNU+ AFC coalition maintains that the anomalies and irregularities which have been uncovered during the recount process cannot be accepted and will form the grounds for an election petition.

This might be another trick. Granger should reach out to the Carter Center to agree to a conditional concession.

The PPP takes over, Carter Center shepherd a constitutional reform project with a two-year timeline. After this, new elections under new constitution.

This elections petition was available to the PNC since early March but instead they foolishly spent the next 5 months further destroying their standing amongst the voters.

It could be the PNC seeking to make the Chairperson second guess herself. I said PNC and not Granger because he is only the face and not really the engine.
