Granting relief to farmers, sugar workers only empowers PPP support base – Norton
People’s National Congress (PNC) Member, Aubrey Norton is of the opinion that granting flood relief to farmers and sugar industry workers only serves to empower the support base of the governing People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C).
Norton, in alleging racial and political discrimination, classified sugar workers and farmers as solely being supporters of the regime. This is however contrary to what exists. Similarly, not all public servants including members of the disciplined services are supporters of the political Opposition.
But Norton said that doling out billions of dollars to these cohorts will only empower the PPP activists and supporters.
“Clearly the installed regime’s aim is to empower PPP activists and the PPP support base while impoverishing the rest of the Guyanese population. While the PPP support base is benefitting significantly from so-called flood relief, the public service, inclusive of the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force is deliberately deprived of salary increases. The intention is economic oppression with the aim of domination and control. This policy will fail,” he said
