[www.inewsguyana.cm] – General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C), Clement Rohee has made it pellucid that the Party will not contest the long overdue Local Government Elections (LGE) if Dr Steve Surujbally is still Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

When asked about the issue at a press conference on Monday, June 15, Rohee said, “Not with Mr Surujbally. We’ve already called for Mr Surujbally’s resignation. We want Mr Surjubally’s resignation almost immediately.

After losing the May 11 general and regional elections to the APNU+AFC coalition, the PPP/C have accused Dr Surujbally and GECOM of working in collusion with the coalition to rig the elections.

The PPP has since mounted several protests, calling for the Chairman’s resignation. In a May 18 press statement, the PPP/C had expressed that it no longer has confidence in Dr Surujbally, who has been Chairman of the elections Body for approximately 10 years.

The PPP/C was unseated from 23 years of government by the APNU+AFC coalition but did not accept defeat, citing a flawed electoral process. Local government elections were last held in 1994.

It has been a contentious issue ever since, with the former PPP government being heavily criticized for not holding the elections, even though the former President had promised to do so.

The new government has since made the very promise to hold the elections sometime this year.

Big anti-man bluff.  The PPP is in the upcoming elections and will win the majority of the NDC.

They will lose Georgetown, Linden, Bartica and New Amsterdam hands down.  But the will win most other areas.

Would it not make political sense for the AFC to contest LGE separately?

The benefits to the AFC is numerous. It will allow you geniuses to actually build a real political party with a real local infrastructure or people whose positions are tied to the local party.

What political and electoral purpose does a joint pre-election slate serve for LGE?

Are you all intending on keeping only some nominal independence from the PNC?

Were the ordinary AFC membership polled on this? Or is this another Decree from Mount Olympus?

The AFC is not in a position politically or financially to launch any electoral campaign and plus all the top leaders of the AFC are busy like rass in Government.

Donors are financially fatigued and the GT businessmen are lining up to dole out money to President Granger.

They cannot give 3 ways, only 2 ways. (PPP, APNUAFC)

So the AFC does not have or want to cultivate local leadership outside of Cabinet?

LGE elections are not about money. They're about selecting the right local candidates (or rather having them selected by your local village party) and they bring in the votes based on their on personal appeal in their area.

Of course not doing this is a perfect way to keep the AFC as a party of some old men and 1 woman and their hangers on in it for the FB photo ops.

The AFC never fails to disappoint.

you are a PPP 'race first' not-so-undercover operative investing heavily in jealousy, suspicion and, above all, appeals to vanity wrapped in virulent anti-blackman tribalism as means to rip the Coalition apart and resucitate the fortunes of the neo-Hindutva PPP of your dreams

yesss . . . of course the AFC [not yet biting] continues to "disappoint" alyuh

Rohee and his PPP peers are making asses of themselves. Surujbally is the PPP's problem only. For all other Guyanese and foreign observers, GECOM is in good hands. I hope Surujbally stays there whether or not the PPP contests LGE.

If President Granger accedes to PPP demand and instructs Surujbally to resign, I would like the following names to be considered as GECOM Chairman: Hamilton Green, Tony Veira, Christopher Ram, Anand Goolsarran.

If Rohee thinks Surujbally bad, mo bad gon come.
