Embattled Police Commissioner Henry Greene (left) and Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee at last evening’s Night of Carols at the Police Officers’ Mess.

Confusion seems to be the order of the day as it relates to who is in charge of the Guyana Police Force, in light of the proceeding on leave of embattled Commissioner Henry Greene.

This newspaper understands that Commanders and Heads of Department have received two memoranda, with differing versions of who they should report to: Acting Commissioner Leroy Brummel or Greene himself.

On Saturday President Donald Ramotar announced that Greene was given permission to proceed on leave to facilitate an investigation into allegations made by a 34-year old woman that he had raped her.

The President disclosed that Assistant Commissioner Leroy Brummel will act as the top cop in the interim.

According to at least three reliable sources, on Saturday Divisional Commanders and Heads of Departments received a memorandum informing them that they should report to Brummel.

However, they subsequently received another memorandum yesterday from Greene reminding them that he was still in charge of the Guyana Police Force.

Questions are being raised as to the credibility of any investigation against Greene, since from all appearances, the latest memo is intimidating.

President Ramotar has informed that he has ordered the Ministry of Home Affairs to seek external help for the investigations.

There are many who feel that instead of Greene proceeding on leave he should have been interdicted at least or asked to step down all together.
