PNC spokesman on finance, Carl Greenidge, should be the last person in Guyana to attempt to lecture anyone on public accountability, according to Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh.
The Minister was responding to comments attributed by today’s Kaieteur News to the former PNC Finance Minister on the matter of the financial papers to be considered by Parliament at tomorrow’s sitting.
The Minister pointed out that Greenidge has the dubious distinction of committing the most flagrant disregard for public accountability during his own tenure, having failed to produce audited public accounts for over a decade, and having refused permission to the Auditor General to perform audits of public sector entities.
Minister Singh stated that Greenidge’s track record on matters concerning public accountability is so dismal that he should be embarrassed to even comment on the subject.
“The magnitude and implications of Greenidge’s disregard for public accountability during his own tenure as Minister under the PNC are still be to be fully grasped,” Minister Singh stated.
Greenidge also demonstrated his lack of familiarity with the laws and Constitutional provisions governing financial matters recently when he sought to usurp the Speaker’s constitutional mandate by attempting to table the Auditor General’s report at last week’s sitting of the Assembly.
As a result of his violation of the Constitutional provisions governing tabling of the Auditor General’s report Speaker, Raphael Trotman was forced to apologise for the act committed by Greenidge while he, Trotman was presiding over the House. Trotman attempted to gloss over the matter by stating that “mistakes will happen”.
