Grenades, AK 47 ammunition found in box in Lamaha Canal

Sixteen grenades, several AK-47 ammunition, 13 grenade fuses and seven .9mm ammunition along with a gun cleaning kit were on Saturday afternoon discovered partially submerged in the Lamaha Canal in the vicinity of the Botanical Gardens. The discovery was made by a Constable attached to the Mayor and City Council constabulary unit at about 14:40h. According to information received, the Constable reportedly was in the area and observed a green box partially submerged in the water at the edge of the canal and out curiosity, he pulled it from the water. Due to the weight of the box, the Constable reportedly prized open the box and upon doing so, he found the green objects and various sizes of ammunitions. He immediately contacted the Police and informed them of the find. Ballistics experts arrived at the scene and took possession of the box and its contents but not before examining them. From all indication, while the grenades are in working condition, the pins/fuses were detached. Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed the discovery of the grenades and ammunitions and told Guyana Times that ballistics experts are currently dusting them for possible fingerprints. This discovery came in light of the Public Security’s Gun Amnesty Programme which will come to an end on October 14. During the first period of the gun amnesty programme, the Guyana Police Force has collected a total of 142 firearms and over 1700 rounds of ammunition. A Division (Georgetown/East Bank Demerara) has topped the list with hundreds of ammunition and firearms handed in. The other Divisions that have seen favourable responses to the amnesty programme were C (East Coast Demerara), D (West Bank Demerara-East Bank Essequibo), E (Linden-Kwakwani) and F (Interior locations). Of the 142 firearms handed in, there were 121 shotguns, 10 pistols, seven air rifles, three revolvers and one AK-47 assault rifle. With respect to ammunition, the highest total handed in was 1192 7.62Γ—39, along with several .22, .32 and .9mm magazines.

They should check the origin of this ammo. I won't be surprised if the MadBurro sent it to the PPP from Venezuela when he was having thoughts of invading Guyana. Kudos to Granger for standing firm.

Police at the scene yesterday

Police yesterday found 11 fragmentation and four concussions grenades, two blank and one live 7.62X39 ammunition, seven 9MM rounds, a firearm cleaning kit and an army badge of Major rank.

These explosives were discovered in the Lama Canal on Mandela Avenue. They were found in a green grenade box and appeared to be almost brand new.

Kaieteur News understands that just after 15:00 hrs yesterday a city constable noticed a box in some bushes almost in the Lama Canal on Mandela Avenue.

According to reports, he was about to pull up the box when its content fell into the water. When he realized what it was, the police was immediately informed.

When this newspaper arrived at the scene yesterday, the area was cordoned off and a rank could have been seen diving into the water to retrieve the explosives.

It is believed that the items discovered came from the army since a Guyana Defence Force (GDF)’s badge of major rank was among the items.

Investigations are ongoing.

The Guyana Police Force is still processing the grenades and AK-47 ammunition which were discovered on Saturday. On Sunday, A Division (Georgetown-East Bank) Commander Clifton Hicken told Guyana Times that it appeared that the grenades and ammunition were in the canal for a while now. β€œWe are still processing the discovery and it seems it has been there for a long time,” he said.
