Following the successful staging of the ‘Golden Jubilee’Drag Race Meet to commemorate Guyana’s Independence Anniversary earlier this year, drag racing fans could now set their focus on the final international Drag Meet of the year scheduled to be held on October 2, at the South Dakota Circuit.
Hosted by the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC) it is expected that a large contingent of dragsters from neighbouring Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago will descend on these shores to battle the locals in what is anticipated to provide gripping excitement for motor racing fans.
President of the GMR&SC Raj Boodhoo speaking with Kaieteur Sport recently said that due to Guyana’s outstanding performance in Suriname just over a forthnight ago, he expects the day’s proceedings to resemble a dogfight as the countries battle for individual and overall supremacy.
Boodhoo disclosed that the Dutch territory, which has been the strongest regional supporter of drag racing in Guyana, will no doubt be sending some of its best dragsters to wrest the title from Guyana, but is predicting that the locals are brimming with confidence and he expects nothing less than victory.
Guyana will have as its spearhead the lightning fast Toyota Supra of Rondel Daby, while his sibling Peter and Anand Ramchand’s Mitsubishi Evos are capable of recording stunning times.
Just to add more potency to the Guyana line-up will be Sanjay Persaud, while female driver Sharima Khan is always a joy to watch when tussling with the male opposition.
The Dutch who came here for the ‘Golden Jubilee’ Meet will no doubt be led by the experience Hans Ijzer in his powerful GMC Typhoon along with backup from Ashton Ceyaram in his Toyota Chaser, Ruifan Chen in his Honda Integra, Prakash Lachman (Toyota Supra), Micheal Namchand (RX7) among others.
It is difficult to see anyone upstaging Charlie Henry in the 1000cc Superbike category, but the presence of Surinamese Tom Gumperts Suzuki GSX R, Anthony Sokromo and Giovanni Slagveer astride a similar machine could offer a formidable challenge for him.
There seems to be lots of excitement in store in every division so the best advice is to be at the Circuit and feel the thrill of excitement as the daredevils battle each other for supremacy on the quarter mile dragstrip with their speed monsters. The Porta Tree Timing device with specialized starting lights will be operational throughout the day.
Starting time is 09:00 hrs and admission is adults $1000, children $500, while those under the age of 12 years and vehicles are free.
