The Guyana Taekwondo Association (GTA) on Friday last hosted its first βBack to Schoolβ Taekwondo Gyrugi (fighting) Competitionβ in what it hopes to be an annual event. This competition was focused on the junior class with the aim of: marking the end of the long school holiday period and to usher in the new school term and the general promotion and development of young athletes. The event kicked off with Omario Darlington and Akeem Fowler kicking it out in Group A. While they were both shaky at first the action soon picked up with Fowler scoring the first point. He continued to get the better of Darlington thus landing him the first place position ahead of Darlington. The action in Group B continued with Anthony Court and Arshad Ali. It was Court who nonetheless clinched the first place with a two point margin difference over Ali. It was however in Group C where the action really got going in the battle of the tiny tots. Facing off were off springs of taekwondo students β Nathan Vanderhyden and Vivek Bassoo, Emma Mandall the lone female and Shibraj Jacob. The action started with Vanderhyden against Jacob, the former displayed a great deal of superiority over the latter and clinched the fight comfortably by a nine point margin. Taking center stage next were Mandall and Bassoo where they both tried to outscore each other with their tiny legs, but it was Bassoo who prevailed in the end. Mandall shrugged off the loss to Bassoo to return and get the better of Jacob in the fight for third and fourth place. In the first place fight, Vanderhyden stole the show to defeat Bassoo by nine clear points. The champion displayed a high degree of superiority and surely impressed all the judges, coaches and spectators. Battling it out in Group D were Tejindra Ramcharran, Khadeeja Taljit (female), Rodwin Famey and Matthew Khan. The first bout saw Ramcharran and Taljit going head to head with Ramcharran winning despite a good fight from Taljit. The brave Taljit traded kicks with Ramcharran but the winner was able to throw more kicks which landed him victory. Then it was over to Famey and Khan with Famey getting the better of Khan. Taljit returned to beat Khan for in the third place match while in the first place showdown kicks and punches were traded continuously between eventual winner by a slim two points, Ramcharran and Famey. Arvinda Comacho defeated Ricardo Ramlall for the top spot in Group E. The competition was successfully coordinated by Coach β Ms. La Toya Herbert who informed that she again had fun working with all the participants, judges and coaches.
