GTT Tapeball Competition… Six West Dem./West Bank teams advance to Super 16 Rd

Following an intense day of battles at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground yesterday, six teams from the West Bank / West Demerara zone of the GTT 5-overs, 7-a-side Tapeball cricket competition have advanced to the Super 16 round which will be contested on Sunday next at the National Park when the tournament will conclude.
On a steamy day which saw a total of 22-teams turning up to take part, only six made it through when the final ball was bowled in the second round of matches. Striking luck on the day were Rising Stars ‘B’ Team which drew the bye to the final day of competition.
That apart, Spartans, West Dem 08, South Side, Specialists and Invaders are the other five teams that have advanced to the Super 16 round of matches. Yesterday’s first round saw the teams battling for 5-overs each but the captains and organiser agreed in the interest of time and fading light that the second round of matches would be 2-overs per side.
The highlight of this round was the demolition of Windsor Forest by Specialists and particularly, opening batsman Malcolm Hubbard who clobbered the Windsor Forest opening bowler for the winning runs in just 3-balls.
Windsor Forest took first strike and posted 17-2 off their 2-overs, Hubbard blasted the first three balls for sixes to end the match in breathtaking fashion in taking his team to the Super 16 round. This was the only team that chased down a total successfully in the second round of matches.
Spartans posted 19-3 and restricted All Youth Sports Club to 10-3 in reply. West Dem. 08 rallied to 25-3 and limited Ocean View to 15-2 in response. In a heart popping match, South Side managed 15-2 off their two overs; Tornado almost made it through, they ended on 14-2.
Invaders trounced Progressive Youth by 16 runs; the former hammered 25 runs off their 2-overs losing one wicket in the process, Progressive Youth limped to 9-1 chasing.
In the first round, Windsor Forest made the highest score of the day off their 5-overs, 83-3 with Deoram Chanderlir blasting 45. Pacesetters in reply were limited to the lowest total of the entire competition to date, 15-5.
Prior to this match the lowest score was 17-4 which was made by Rising Stars ‘A’ against South Side which responded with 23-0 led by Brian Hubbard’s 19. Central Stars posted 62-2 to which Ocean View responded with 66-4.
Tornado All Stars got past HSS Safron Lions having reached 43-3 chasing the Lions’ 42-4. West Dem 08 restricted Top Class to 44-3 off their five and knocked up 46-2 with 3-balls to spare.
Rising Star ‘B’ took care of Goed Intent which made 36-1 to which Rising Star responded with 37-1. All Youth Sports Club, led by Jermaine ‘KP’ Ramroop, who lashed 26 (3×6), overhauled United All Rounders’ 42-5 by reaching 43-0.
Invaders posted 64-6 to which Defenders could only reach 59-5. Progressive Youth made 36-3 responding to 34-3 by All Star 7, while Out and Bad were tamed by Specialist who made 20-0 replying to Out and Bad’s 19-1.
The competition will continue today at the National Cultural Center Tarmac with the Georgetown Zone teams battling for spots in the Super 16 Round.
