Except for an unfortunate incident which occurred during the semi-finals in Albouystown, the response by fans this year have been overwhelming and extremely encouraging and the reward for this has to be the dream final that pits defending champion Sparta Boss versus West Front Road ‘Gold is Money this Saturday, at Demerara Park opposite Thirst Park.
The Organisers of the Georgetown Zone Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Competition could not ask for a better matchup between two teams that clearly deserves to contest the final of this year’s event which has seen record turnouts in every community that the games were played.
Friends and foes of the reigning champion were questioning whether they had lost their aura and were no longer unbeatable, but they’ve answered in emphatic fashion and will now have the opportunity to defend their title against a team that has been playing the most impressive football in the tournament.
Sparta Boss somehow loves the Guinness tournaments; a view that has been substantiated by their unrivalled record, so ‘Gold is Money’ will have to continue their imperious form if they are to register an upset against kings of Guinness.
Word is that Sparta’s talisman Devon Millington may return for the final, while Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, who held the fort so admirably in Millington’s absence has shown the level of consistency that should be a cause of worry for their opponents.
Then when you add the indomitable Sheldon Shepherd, Eusi Phillips and Cleon Forrester to the lineup then it becomes more visible the task that ‘Gold is Money’ has on its hands.
The West Ruimveldt-based unit is not without its stars as well with Randolph Wagner filling the void left by the absence of their ‘uno numero’ player Hubert Pedro, who is playing abroad.
Wagner has shown superb form to date and expressed confidence of maintaining his goal-scoring prowess in the final.
His support will come from the experienced Philip Rowley, who was drafted in for this tournament, while players the calibre of Michael and Jamal Pedro and Deon Alfred are all lethal scorers capable of winning matches.
It has all the hallmarks of providing fans with a riveting conclusion to what has been described as one of the best tournaments in terms of attendance.
Come out and support the final and present a fitting end to a successful tournament.
