Guyana below fellow Caricom countries on 2014 press freedom index

FEBRUARY 12, 2014 · BY  · 7 COMMENTS    2 hours ago

The 2014 World Press Freedom Index has Guyana in almost the same position as last year and significantly below its fellow Caricom countries.

Put together by Reporters without Borders, the 2014 listing released today ranks Guyana at 67 out of 180.

Compared to Guyana’s 67, Jamaica was the best ranked Caricom country of those included in the survey. It came in at 17, followed by Belize (first time in the survey) at 29, Suriname at 31, Antigua and Barbuda at 36, Trinidad and Tobago at 43 and Haiti at 47.

Gov't supporters in Guyana are afraid to come out speak and write about the political issues affecting the nation because of a violent and vindictive opposition. Their stranglehold on the military, policy, civil service, and judiciary has been a headache and a stumbling block to social and economice changes. Supporters of the opposition are extremely vocal in the media and on the streets. This is main reason why we are ranked below our sister Caribbean nations. It's the only country in the world where a gov't wield so little bit power.

Don't know their methodology in determining rankings, but what I can say is that Guyana has one of the most liberal presses in the world, every day Kaiteur and Stabroek criticize govt with no repercussion. So I don't see where they can claim a lack of press freedom.

Press freedom in Guyana? That's a joke. The PPP hired Roger Khan to murder Wadell because he dared to speak out against the govt. They fired Freddie Kissoon and his wife from government jobs because he dared to criticize the PPP. Threw a bucket of shit on him, hired someone to punch him, cooked up a fake lawsuit for libel. Threw Benschop in jail on a trumped up charge for exposing the murderous and corrupt ways of the PPP. Stopped government ads in the Stabroek and Kaieteur News, two newspapers with the largest circulation, and gave them to Bobby's Guyana Times which is used for toilet paper and wrapping fish. Prevented Lindeners from having TV stations. Gave the radio licences to their cronies only. Murdered reporters from the Kaieteur News. That's the press freedom in Guyana.

“The World Press Freedom Index is a reference tool that is based on seven criteria: the level of abuses, the extent of pluralism, media independence, the environment and self-censorship, the legislative framework, transparency and infrastructure,” said Reporters Without Borders secretary-general Christophe Deloire.

“It makes governments face their responsibilities by providing civil society with an objective measure, and provides international bodies with a good governance indicator to guide their decisions.” [SOURCE: REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS]

Your cousin Jagdeo gave out Radio & TV Licenses to numerous Friends and Fambly. That is probably what put us down in the survey.

Most of their criteria has nothing to do with press freedom. What is evident is that there is no intimidation of printed media in Guyana as this media is free to slander govt every day without repercussion.  If you doubt me look at Kaiteur and Stabroek.

The 2014 World Press Freedom Index is out and what does Stabroek News do? Look for anything negative to highlight.
But with Guyana achieving a better ranking (67 out of 180 in 2014 compared to 69 out of 180 in 2013) this year than it did in 2013 Stabroek News resorts to comparing our ranking with the rest of the Caribbean. Anyone having doubts about Stabroek News hidden political agenda?

The founders of the stabroek news were prominent in the movement to bring the PPP into power and they did so mainly by dissemination of information. If the see the crooks in the PPP doing exactly what they fought against why would they not be concerned to highlight that? The PPP is using the national press as its propaganda machine. You, last of all should be shouting about press bias when you work for the PPP political dark arts department that uses national funds to fund misinformation campaigns.
