Guyana could tap US$3B Chinese funding

Guyana will soon be looking at how it will tap into a US$3 billion total funding announced by the Chinese government, during a visit of that country’s President Xi Jinping to Port of Spain, Trinidad.

This was announced by President Donald Ramotar, shortly after Caribbean Community (Caricom) heads met with the Chinese head of state at the Hilton Hotel, for a luncheon.

“The Chinese government has committed to give the region much more assistance: US$1.5 billion to help with some infrastructural work and US$1.5 billion in concessionary loans for the region, so I think China has demonstrated once again, its friendship to our region, and to help us to try to improve the quality of life for the peoples of our countries,” President Ramotar said in an invited comment.

How things change, the US used to be the one offering aid and loans, now China take over. But yet the US want to dictate how the country should be run.  We must not forget the biggest gift from the US, 27 years of PNC when they orchestrated the ouster of Jagan. However Jagan would have also run the country into the ground as he was even more hardcore communist.

How is money free when it is a loan? In fact if you were a businessman you would know the benefits of borrowing today to develop for tomorrow. Without loans the entire world would be undeveloped.

China has surplus cash and needs to spend especially with the US deficits on the wane and interest rates low.  China is experiencing headwinds as manufacturing returns to the US.

Furthermore, no nation comes close to the clout the US wields on the international stage.  Most global institutions are run by the USA.  Today, even China sneezes when the US catches a cold.

They may have clout, but much less than before. Even today, the Indian engineers see the US as a second choice after an assignment in the Far East or one of the affluent Arab nations.

But more importantly, the US has lost the edge in giving aid to needy nations, especially with their huge financial obligations to Israel, Iraq, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
