SOME 60 percent of the current rice crop, which is equivalent to about 160,000 tonnes of rice, has been harvested and so far its quality is even better than that of the last crop.

In a telephone interview on Friday, General Secretary of the Guyana Rice Producers Association (RPA), Mr. Dharamkumar Seeraj said the current weather conditions are ideal for harvesting and as such, it is proceeding smoothly in all rice producing areas of Guyana. He advised that harvesting in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), the largest rice producing region in Guyana, is approximately 75 percent complete with some 10,000 hectares harvested. In addition, Seeraj related that 3,700 hectares have been harvested in Region 3 (Essequibo Islands /West Demerara), 27,050 in Region 4 (Demerara/Mahaica), 13,000 in Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice) and 20,000 in Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne). Moreover, he reported that while yields vary in different areas, the overall average yield for the second crop of 2013 is five tonnes per hectare. In an interview last month with the Guyana Chronicle, Agriculture Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy indicated that the local rice industry will surpass the 500,000-tonne mark. The first crop of this year performed exceedingly well with a production of some 263,000 tonnes, significantly more than its target of 206,000 tonnes. According to Ramsammy the current crop is also on track to be a very successful one. The annual production target for this year is 412,000 tonnes; a figure which the minister said will be easily surpassed. However, he noted that this crop is not one without challenges. While August is usually one of the driest months of the year, this August was one of the wettest with some 20 days of rain. This was the time when harvesting was beginning and dry weather was required. Although there was a setback at that time, the weather has significantly improved and is now suitable for harvesting. Another major challenge that the rice industry had to deal with this year is a high infestation of paddy bugs which had caused some damage in the first crop. There was a resurgence of paddy bugs earlier in the second crop, but owing to government programmes and interventions through the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) and the RPA, the situation is now under control. Meanwhile, Seeraj also related that export to Venezuela, the largest importer of Guyana’s rice, is on target. In addition, he pointed out that rice is also being exported to Caribbean countries such as Trinidad and Tobago, and to Europe
