SL records second highest female suicides

The World Health Organization (WHO) latest statistics indicated that Sri Lanka had the second highest female suicide rate in the World, which is 16.8 per 100,000. Only other country listed with higher female suicide rate other than Sri Lanka is Korea with 22.1 per 100,000. The third and fourth places are occupied by China and Guyana respectively with 14.8 and 13.4.
Almost in every country male suicide rates are greater than the female suicide rates. In Sri Lanka the suicide rate is recorded to be 44.6 per 100,000 and holds the 4th highest rank in the WHO statistic list. Lithuania has the highest male suicide rate of 61.3 per 100,000, and Russian federation 53.9 per 100,000 in the 2nd place.
WHO statistics also shows that suicide is the thirteenth-leading cause of death worldwide also showing that the suicide rate has gone up by 60% over the last five decades highlighting the industrialized nations across the globe. 60% of all suicides are reported from Asian countries where China India and Japan account for about 40% of all suicides.
