No wonder we in this shhh........

So an international travel writer who has been all around the world came on a visit to Georgetown Guyana and was unimpressed and listed the country as one of the worst places he has ever visited. I see many folks are being self righteous and rather than deal with the message they decide to attack the messenger.

First of all, the man is talking about his experience and is comparing it to his other experiences around the world, so he must know what he is talking about.

But let's be real, to any first time visitor, there is very little that Georgetown has to offer anyone. The city is full of garbage, historical buildings are falling apart, national monuments are being defaced, power outages have become a regular occurrence and in the land of many waters, not much comes through your tap. And no one even bothers to consume what actually comes through the tap when it comes.

Georgetown is the Capital but it is not treated that way. Many streets are unlit. Believe it or not, you can actually count the number of power poles with working lamps on Regent Street on your two hands. Parapets are hardly maintained. In the main business areas and main shopping areas, the presence of garbage rivals the number of shoppers. Customer service in many stores and restaurants stink, public transportation operators live in a world by themselves where having profanity laced conversations and playing profanity laced songs represent just another day at the park.

There is not much local cuisine being offered by many of the restaurants, try finding a seafood spot and they'll direct you to one of the many fish shops that offer you nothing more than fish and plantain fries. Nightspots offer very little entertainment and you'll have to wait until the weekend unless of course, Sita's Bar is your pick.

And let's not even get started with the robberies and violent crimes that occur every single day. According to the Police, over 600 armed robberies for the year. At least someone still counting.

Let's face it. We do not and have not been taking care of our city. It has been allowed to rot and fall apart. Don't even bother to tell me about taking a trip to the interior because unless you are a nature lover, I do not know of many tourists who would abandon the city to go in the bush. The city is where most people like to be.

The man's short article should serve as a wake up call for us all to do better and to demand change. But many of us have sadly, been living so long and so comfortable in the S%it, we don't even realise it still stinks.

All that garbage are the waste products of the items that friends of the PPP import and sell. VAT is levied, but none of it is spent on cleaning up the mess that is created as the result of the PPP "get rich quick" strategy.

Mr.T

You have a mayor by the name Bilal who embezzles from the coffers of the city and take bribes from those individuals and businesses who owe the town council millions in taxes. The PNC are in cahoots with Bilal to destroy the capital and blame it on the PPP. They are not picking up all of the  garbage even though the money is being spent to do so. The game is to let the filth builds up and become a gov't problem. The gov't. is then forced to expend millions in taxpayers dollars to hire emergency crews to relieve the City of filth and stench.

This word picture of Georgetown is sharp and clear. Georgetown was my second home. I worked there for 25 years and lived there, along with Kitty, a total of 17 years. Reading the piece above, I can see and hear and smell the degradation of what was once called THE GARDEN CITY OF THE WEST INDIES. This situation is enough to make one sad and angry.

I pity the citizens of Georgetown who are forced to endure the rot.

Politics aside, Local Elections will solve these types of problems across Guyana.

I know that you don't know this because local elections were TWENTY years ago but the PNC LOST Georgetown.  A party which NO LONGER EXISTS won.

Still think that LGE is a waste of time?

Does it matter if he agrees with him or not or that the gentleman, per his experience, felt as he did? The unconcern about random dumping is not in GT alone. It is a problem everywhere. In growing up that was not the case and it somehow cheeped into the minds of the people over the years that this is tolerable.

Mars was barely alive when the brits were there. He would not if ever have a memory of what you are talking about. I am his age possibly older than him and barely remember the cork hat only because an uncle of mine used to wear one in his capacity as the rural post man. Mars is an educated professional with a skill set that hires chauffeurs so why would he want to be one at this time in is life? Speaking to the ills of our society or having opinions of how to change it needs to be addressed on those terms and not on the basis of silly commentary. Again, Mars would not know what you are talking about.

I provided the link for reference. That a famous travel critic can make such a pronouncement on our country is a sad reflection of the current state of affairs in our once beautiful garden city. Maybe where you came from you were used to filth all around and you feel nostalgic whenever you see the piles of garbage on the streets of Guyana.

Only an idiot like you would see me as having some recollections to colonial times of cork hats and khakis when I have no connection to that long past era. I am not a foolish old hypocrite like you. One who sponges on the benefits of Yankee Doodle Soup while longing to return to the days when you shined the gonads of the Soviet White men with your saliva.
