The Jaguars One Day 50 Overs League will bowl off today. The One Day 50 Overs league comes on the heels of a resounding successful Jaguars 3 Day League, which witnessed Essequibo emerging champions.
The Jaguars 3 Day Champions, Essequibo, second placed Upper Corentyne, and Lower Corentyne who prior to 2017 held both the Jaguars 3 Day and One Day 50 Overs titles, are expected to lead the charge in the quest to secure championship honors of the 2017 Jaguars One Day 50 Overs league. However, the competitive West Demerara, and steady and ever improving teams such Georgetown and Upper Demerara/East Bank are perceived as teams that can create league upsets, and league favorites such as Essequibo and Lower Corentyne will be mindful of such a threat.
However, East Coast Demerara and West Berbice should not be overlooked, as they too will be seeking to establish their dominance, thereby creating a competitive environment among and between franchise teams. Further, the competitiveness of the league is expected to be boosted by the fact that, players will be seeking to make full use of this league format, by staking their claim to selection in the 2018 Jaguars One Day 50 Overs squad. The Jaguars One Day 50 overs team will participate in the 2018 CWI Regional Nagio One Day 50 Overs Tournament, which will commence towards the end of January, 2017. A tournament which Guyana Jaguars will be seeking to lift championship honors.
The Jaguars One Day 50 Overs League will witness seven preliminary rounds of high level cricket action, with four such rounds of matches being played in November and the remaining three preliminary rounds of matches being played in December. The franchise team which finishes with the most points at the end of the preliminary rounds, will gain the right to play in the final on 30 December.
Similarly, the second and third placed teams on conclusion of the preliminary rounds will meet in the play-offs on the 28 December. The first round of matches will be played today from 09:00 hours and will observe the 2017 Jaguars 3 Day Champions, Essequibo competing against West Berbice at the Imam Bacchus ground in Essequibo, Upper Corentyne doing battle with East Coast Demerara at the Port Mourant ground on the Corentyne, Berbice, Lower Corentyne competing with Georgetown at the Albion Community Centre ground, and Upper Demerara/East Bank opposing West Demerara at the Everest Ground. Further, it should be noted, that the players of each match round, will be selected from the franchise Squads submitted to the GCB, except for wholly acceptable reasons.
