Guyana Prison Service forges stronger ties with regional counterparts

The Guyana Prison Service as part of its one-week anniversary celebrations held a march pass on Brickdam before Minister of Home Affairs Clement Rohee and Director of Prisons Dale Erskine.
Also present at this morning’s events were members of the Cayman Islands and Jamaica’s correctional facilities who have been in the country during the week to understudy Guyana’s prison system with the aim of implementing measures where necessary in their system.
Minister Rohee encouraged members of the visiting officers to take advantage of the period of time spent understudying Guyana’s system so as to ensure they are well equipped on their return to transform their system to higher levels.
He also said that the country is developing rapidly; therefore modernization is imminent, particularly to the justice system.

“The Security sector has been modernizing; we are proceeding with a justice sector improvement programme which will benefit the prison as a correctional facility/institution. This transformation will go a far way in assisting every institution within the justice system. With respect to the prison itself, a strategic plan has been approved with an apparatus which will be setup for its execution. We cannot modernize without modernizing the penal system,” Minister Rohee said.
Officer in Charge of the Cayman Islands contingent expressed appreciation to the Minister and members of the prison service for their hospitality and stated that the decision was made to visit Guyana because former Guyanese Prison Officers make up their ranks and their performance is exemplary. Towards this end, an understudy of the Guyana Prison Service will be essential to their growth.

The observance of Prison Service week provides a time for all within and affiliated to the service to reflect on the progress made in correction of offenders and of the contribution of the Guyana Prison Service to public safety. For more than 27 years, the Guyana Prison Service has set aside a period heralded for such celebrations, during which a number of programmes and events are staged at prison locations across the country.
Some of the significant developments the Prison Service has seen are; the establishment of the Sentence Management Board, the establishment of the Guyana Prison Service Agriculture Development Board, the appointment of the Recruitment Board which includes civilian members, the development of a new Strategic Plan 2011-2015, the establishment a training facility for Prison Officers and improvements to the accommodation and general facilities for officers and inmates.
