Dear Editor,

Less than one month ago, an August 11, 2021 media-circulated memo to Minister Dr. Frank Anthony from the Chief Medical Officer (ag.), Dr. Narine Singh, represented that, “It is recommended that persons who tested positive for COVID-19 can receive their vaccines after 90 days (from the date that he/she was tested positive).” This notwithstanding, both airline and immigration officials have been demanding and continue to demand of all incoming passengers – along with evidence of a recent negative PCR test result – evidence of being vaccinated. As a direct consequence of the postures of the two, and against my wishes, I cancelled – with financial penalty – my recent travel booking with Caribbean Airlines.

I note too, that the CMO’s referenced recommendation syncs with how I interpreted the pieces of advice from at least three (3) physicians I consulted – one (1) in his office here in Guyana, and one (1) each via phone, from the Caribbean and from North America – during the period I was infected with the COVID-19 virus. In almost photocopy like fashion, each discounted the wisdom of being administered the COVID-19 vaccine, “too quickly after recovery”. Obviously, I’ve opted to follow the advice of physicians who are undoubtedly guided by their conventional medical training.

Like many of my fellow Guyanese, I continue to pledge to be obedient to the laws of Guyana – the land of my nativity, but I’m challenged when the law conflicts with incontrovertible medical advice. It appears that solid medical advice can be illegal, or at least be outlawed – even if temporarily.  In August:

•  I was turned away from the Eugene F. Correia Airport when I attempted to uplift a package sent to me from overseas,

• I was turned away from Camp Street’s Immigration Office when I attempted to do some business there, and

• My charge, in her mid-teens, was denied entry to Guyana Revenue Authority.

The outdoor facilities that worked so well during the early COVID-19 experience have in the main vanished.

On another matter, my teen aged daughter was advised by a rank at Eve Leary Traffic Headquarters that the “packages” required for study to prepare for assessment as a learner driver will not be available until January 2022 earliest – that’s four (4) months hence. At GECOM, she was advised that no registration is currently being conducted by the facility. The value/importance of a driver’s licence and a national identification card cannot be ignored. Both are foundational to the equipping of our youth for their personal and our National development and security.

What’s the position of a fully vaccinated youth who would have been able to find a job as a driver, but can’t? What’s the position of a fully vaccinated working youth who has no bank account and cannot save toward future commitments, or who cannot apply for a low income house lot – because of “lack of ID”? Are we creating work for the Criminal Investigation Department and for our security services? This can’t be the plan! Or is it?

Sincerely,

Gavin Houston

The current Covid measures betray all impressions of genuine care

Dear Editor,

As I reflect on the most recent gazetted orders in Guyana I am reminded of the two women who went before King Solomon claiming to love the same baby. As each claimed the baby, Solomon called his guards and asked for a sword. He told them he decided to cut the baby in half since each was claiming him. One said YES go ahead, cut him, the other said NOOOO give the baby to her and do not hurt him. Solomon knew right away whose baby it was. The one willing to give him away unharmed and while not getting her own way.

Speeches about the public interest, the public good, public safety and public security when the very public in large part is groaning makes me think of strange love. The kind the woman had who wanted Solomon to SLICE the youngster. How do I know it’s the majority groaning? If more were in line with vaccination there would be no need for such harsh measures. Ideals towards herd immunity would be closer to being achieved.

A parent MUST decide and give consent for their child to be vaccinated but cannot decide for themselves. The bit about appointment and PCR is a thinly veiled attempt at giving a choice. It is the same as saying get vaccinated or face our consequences. It is meant to hurt. Organizing sites with free or cheaper testing or using antigen results instead of the most expensive would show an interest in reaching ALL at their level. The current measures in my view betray all impressions of genuine care and giving a choice.

All persons entering public buildings, including supermarkets and churches, must be vaccinated. So a child 12 years and under can go to school but not to church or is it that they are to go without unvaccinated parents with whom they live? Particularly for places of worship who ensures the order is followed? For private organisations, businesses, coaches, and others who polices the order for enforcement?

Banks were allowed to take money from citizens and without warning those citizens are no longer allowed to enter the banks without a vaccine or PCR from an approved site within 72 hours to 7 days. As a law abiding citizen without a vaccine I cannot access the services of the police station but I imagine an unvaccinated criminal will be arrested and taken there.

Perhaps children must be asked to go to the supermarket, banks and other places of import or maybe by tomorrow it will be gazetted that children 12 to 17 cannot do business on the behalf of others. Where will it stop or how far will it go? Something is fundamentally wrong with this approach. I pray good sense prevails. Wisdom is proven right by her children. Besides who takes bread out of the mouth of those they care about? Particularly without warning?

Sincerely,

Covid has turned people into buttheads. While I stayed up north last winter I ordered a small side table from Crappy Tire Corp. I started putting it together when I found it came with two legs instead of three so I called them about it. Three calls later I finally had a live person who told me they do not take back any product until the lockdown is over for the safety of those involved. I asked how was it ok to have the item pulled from the shelf, placed on a truck, sent to me, all this time it would have been handled by several persons but with me sending it back..Oh me Laaawwwddd everybody can catch Covid? (This was before the vaccine being out,) the person at the other end said they will speak with the manager and get back to me..nothing happened.

Finally I contacted the head office and they sent a coupon for the amount of the table. After the Covid bs I returned the table and got back what I spent on it. They lost.

(I built a table with wood removed off of wooden skids in the interim)

Yep, I pulled a McGyver. With wood being expensive and the daughter having a few good skids on the property it was used. It's even better than the crap I returned.
