Guyana’s regional success in athletics has shot off to an early start after Trinidad & Tobago based Guyanese Lionel Dandrade won Suriname’s Bigi Broki Wacka 10km bridge race on Sunday last. Out of a total of 389 participants, Dandrade’s finished in front the pack with a time of 38minutes 19seconds. This was the 38-year-old Dandrade’s fifth win in this annual event after participating in the competition for the past decade, finishing second a few times to the likes of former National Champions, Cleveland Forde, Cleveland Thomas and Kelvin Johnson. In fact, after winning the race in 2016, Dandrade was fifth to the finish line last year but he bounced back to win the race last weekend which wasn’t subscribed by the likes of the Cleveland’s (Forde & Thomas) and Kelvin Johnson. In an invited comment, Dandrade explained to Kaieteur Sport that in his 10-year experience in the Bigi Broki Wacka bridge race, “It’s always a tough race despite my successes and I’m a bit tight right now.” Dandrade participation in the Dutch nation’s road race was made possible by his sponsor, Builders Lumber Yard. The T&T based Guyanese athlete posited to Kaieteur Sport that the reason he migrated was because of the limited amount of competition locally as opposed to the twin island republic’s almost weekly competitions that sometimes see as much as eight competitive races a day.
