The government of Guyana has signed a fourth contract with Venezuela for the supply of 50 thousand tonnes of paddy worth 520 us dollars per metric ton and 20 thousand tonnes white rice at US $800 per metric ton.
According to agriculture Minister Robert Persaud, the Guyana Rice Development Board will continue to ensure local farmers, millers and exporters gain the benefits of accessing such markets.
Along with what was stipulated under the fourth contract of the Guyana/Venezuela rice trade agreement, Guyana will also supply an additional 16 thousand tonnes of white rice and another five thousand tonnes of paddy outstanding from their previous contract.
Agriculture Minister Robert Persaud noted that the government of Guyana has expanded and extended the rice export agreements, upgrading the three previous contracts.
This has taken the overall value of the new shipment to some US $54M. He stressed that local producers are allowed to benefit from increased quantity of exports, with better prices for their products.
βThis trade agreement has allowed for greater benefits to the producers of rice in Guyana and the consumers of the various rice products in Venezuela. This effective bilateral trade agreement between these two South American countries have over the years allowed for improved political and economic relations between Guyana and its neighborβ Minister Persaud said.
Meanwhile the minister pointed out that the rice output for Guyana is expected to surpass the 2010 record, given the first crop production of 2011 and the predicted second crop.
The Guyana Venezuela rice trade agreement was made possible via a meeting between President Bharrat Jagdeo and Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.
