The United Kingdom has announced the donation of 84,800 doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to Guyana as part of the global assistance to fight COVID-19.

In a statement, the British High Commission in Georgetown said the country’s Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab announced that the UK will be sending the AstraZeneca shots to Guyana as part of the first batch of the 100 million doses that the UK pledged to the poorest parts of the world.

The 84,800 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine will be arriving in Guyana on 2nd August.

“The UK is proud to be supporting the expansion of Guyana’s Covid-19 vaccine programme.  We congratulate the Government of Guyana for its determined efforts to roll out this important vaccination – a key step in our exit from all the Covid-19 restrictions we are all having to live through.   I encourage everyone to get evidence-based information on the Covid-19 vaccine, get vaccinated and encourage your friends and family to be vaccinated too.  It saves lives.” British High Commissioner Jane Miller was quoted as saying.

A bilateral agreement was signed between the High Commissioner and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health Malcolm Watkins.

As the country’s vaccination programme intensifies, as of yesterday 247,940 persons took the first dose of the vaccine while 130, 785 persons have received both doses of the vaccines.

The Ministry continues to press forward with its vaccination campaign advising that the vaccines are safe and effective.
