Guyana to sign open skies agreement with US
Government has given approval for the United States to conclude an open skies agreement which applies to the International Aviation industry.
Cabinet Secretary Dr Roger Luncheon made the announcement at his post Cabinet media briefing on Wednesday.
The agreement provides for liberalization of the International Aviation Industry which minimizes government’s intervention, passengers, and cargo as well as state base flights.
This open skies agreement dr luncheon notes enhances the potential to create more affordable, efficient and reliable air transport services to Guyana.
“Allowing the airlines to agree with destinations in the countries that do agree to land other than where they are under prescription under rules and regulations right now force to land so it is possible under open skies Guyana could indeed once it meets the standards have landing other than Timehri and for flights originating from Guyana to land at places other than New York and Miami” Dr luncheon stated.
According to Dr Luncheon several countries including those in CARICOM have concluded similar agreements and boast of the successes.
Additionally the draft agreement that was submitted has been approved and embodies the offer the us is making to potential partners hence signing of the agreement is imminent.
“This is not a collaboration they prepare the draft shows this is what they are offering and in general and negotiation on the terms prior to the conclusion of the agreement would see those areas that are not to the liking of Guyana those areas where the subletting state the us would be willing to modify being modify and then the agreement taking place so the agreement is not a mutually design agreement it is an American agreement to which we acceded” Dr Luncheon stated also.
Currently the local flights are tightly regulated by inter-governmental and international agreements.
However Dr Luncheon adds open skies agreement with the United States is an opportunity provided to Guyana to liberalize.
