The local mining sector will be promoted and opportunities that exist in the sector showcased when Guyana participates in the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) International convention, Trade Show and Investors Exchange scheduled for next week in Toronto, Canada.

Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Robert Persaud at his Ministry, Office of the President, today informed media operatives that Guyana will be represented at the International event.

“Through the auspices of the Canadian Government and the Canadian High Commissioner the possibilities of mining will be highlighted, Guyana will be represented at the annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) International convention, Trade Show and Investors Exchange…this is a very important convention for Guyana as it gives the unique opportunity of establishing ties with the  27 Canadian companies in the business of exploration and prospecting … gold, gas, manganese and oil will be present,” Minister Persaud said.

Minister Persaud also said that the Canadian Government has organised a day dedicated for Guyana, to promote mining sector opportunities in Guyana, where  representing officials can interact with participants, and discuss challenges faced with the aim of developing an objective for first class mining.

“We will not only be looking to establish ties with the companies… a day for Guyana has been planned where we will present opportunities and interact with the 30,000 delegates and the 2700 international companies…the idea is to develop an objective for first class mining and sectors covering the current areas of activity whilst exploring new areas of activities as government is currently looking at diversifying its portfolio,” Minister Persaud said

He added that a lot of interest has been shown by Canada not only for the current mining activities but, also for the development of new areas.

“Because of this high interest there will be meetings with both investors and potential investors…there will be a meeting with officials from the Canadian Government as it pertains to natural resources management to explore and deepen the discussions that already exist in terms of support for natural resources management and environmental management in our country,” Minister Persaud said.

GGMC’s Commissioner Karen Livan said that apart from raising awareness of the opportunities that exist in the mining sector, the commission is emphasising responsibility, not only on the part of the claim holder but also the miners, where they conduct their operations in a more environmentally friendly manner.

“These responsibilities stem from the Mining Act and the Occupational Safety and Health Act...GGMC will be monitoring and enforcing the requirement and responsibilities not only of the operators out there but, also the property holders,” Livan said.

Those representing Guyana at the 2012 PDAC International Convention, Trade Show and Investors Exchange are Minister Persaud, GGMC’s Commissioner Livan, and Deputy Commissioner Rickford Vieira.

The four-day annual Convention has grown in size, stature and influence since it began in 1932 and today is the promotional event of choice for the world’s mineral industry.    Attendees at this event includes geo-scientists, consultants, prospectors, mining executives, exploration managers, mining company personnel, government and geological survey officials, financiers, service and equipment suppliers and mining association representatives.

The PDAC trade show provides mineral explorers, developers and financiers with the latest information on new products, exploration concepts, prospective areas that are available for exploration and results of recent work by property surveys, geological surveys and mineral commodity evaluation based on current conditions.

Additionally, deposits that were recently discovered, soon to be opened mines and industry trends are discussed during the technical sessions.
