OK Folks,

Politics aside, I was shocked to see what a single household puts out for Garbage in Guyana for one pickup day:

Garbage-4-300x200

I remember visiting GT when I was very young and it was squeaky clean with Burnham riding on his horse along an avenue that I cannot even remember the name of it.

If memory serves me right, there were also prisoners cleaning and weeding under the watchful eyes of policemen. I will come back to this later.

I don't know about where you live but in the City of Vaughan where I live, you are allowed only two garbage bags and additional bags have to be paid for. In addition, we have different food bins. Left over food goes into a separate Green bin with fruits and vegetable peels. We also have a blue bin for recycling paper and other recyclable products.

The optics of Guyanese putting out garbage without any regard for the environment and ZERO recycling scares me. What are officers of political office doing about this ?

I was horrified to see in NYC that a similar approach to garbage applies with zero recycling. What kind of world are we leaving for the next generation and what examples are we setting ?

Why can't prisoners assist with cleaning up of the City in GT as they did in the past ? This nastiness and disregard for the city and its cleanliness is not a PPP or a PNC problem but it is a Guyanese problem.

I was horrified during my last visit to see littering and foam cups and plates plus plastic bags everywhere. The problem is not confined to GT alone. Skeldon market which was squeaky clean when I lived in Guyana is no different than GT. The canal beside it is blocked with plastic cups and plates, plastic bags and all sorts of Grabage.

What is wrong with our Guyanese people ? Have they no regard for cleanliness and Mother Earth ?

Yugi I mentioned this exact thing a few years ago.  Back in my time in Guyana Georgetown was known as the Garden City. I doubt it is refer to that anymore.

Blame it all on the disposable times that we live in now. This is happening all over now. Just look at the amount of plastic water bottles, that is just one example.

Burnham had the prisoners weeding and cleaning

A couple of prisoners tried to run away. So I say bring  the chain gang and put the prisoners to clean up the city.

Agreed, plus they get exercise.  Walking down Camp Street I remember seeing them cleaning and cutting grass, place was spic and span.

All they do now is smoke weed and on their phones.  when they get bored they light a lil fire. 😀

Everybody needs to play their part in keeping the city clean. As I see it, the problem lies with the people themselves..they can do much much more. A concerted effort will yield results in this regard, but will involve having some pride. unfortunately I don't see any of this. As for the prisoners cleaning up the city, I did witnessed that. According to one of them, they were allowed to perform these tasks about 3 weeks or so prior to their release.

You people are proposing band-aid solutions to the city's sanitation and garbage disposal problems.  The Sanitation dept. or whatever they call in GT should be well funded and have a competent staff of employees who are hardworking. How much brains does it take to come up with a solution?  Guyanese people at home are disgracing themselves at home and those living abroad.  Imagine this country's capital is only 16 square miles and the city council is incapable of managing garbage collection and disposal.

Imagine APNU put a young and inexperienced Hindu pundit to be mayor.  What is he going to tell the residents of GT about the dirty unsanitary conditions of the city?  Is he going to tell them people to go bathe at sea and do TEA-RAT?

Education is key. It is also a tough call. People needs to understand that they need to clean up after themselves especially in public. On the flip side,  The M&CC needs to bring back those garbage trucks. Remember those? And while they're at it, try to reactivate the incinerator on Princess street or build another one elsewhere. I hate to have to say it, but be it crime, garbage disposal or whatever. For a small country with a small population, it just can't seem to get its shit together.

Guyana's garbage problem is not a GT problem alone. Here are a few from Skeldon.

Bai Skelly, Skeldon was never like that when I was growing up. I remember how the canals and the seawall were clean. What is wrong with our Guyanese nowadays ?

The second picture looks like a canal near the estate.

It's a sideline. If you look over past the bridge you can see sugar cane growing. Skeldon sugar factory in the background by the sideline.DSC_0156
