Guyana and Russia have strengthened their ties with the signing of a visa waiver agreement, which will now allow citizens of the two countries to travel to the two countries without a visa.
The agreement was signed on Sunday at the United Nations between Guyana’s Vice President and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Carl Greenidge and Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergey Lavrov.
Guyana and Russia have shared diplomatic relations for over two decades and have worked together in several development areas.
Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl Greenidge believes that the visa waiver will build and develop the tourism and business sectors between the two countries.
He said “it is a process that is meant to encourage movement between the two countries and in the area of tourism in particular.”
According to the Foreign Minister, the agreement will make it easier for tourists who are seeking to travel to Guyana from Russia. He said one of the biggest problems that have faced Russian tourists in the past, is their inability to apply for a Guyanese visa in Russia and being forced to travel long distances to other states to be granted a Guyana visa.
“Russia is trying to develop on a lot of fronts and this will surely enhance that”, Greenidge said.
He added that with Russian companies already having a number of business interests in Guyana in several sectors, the agreement will serve as encouragement for further investment in Guyana by Russian companies.
