Kaieteur News is the opposition’s specially trained pit bull

It does not matter what you look like, where you live, what your job is or who you support politically, once you dare to have a progressive mindset and want betterment for your family, community and country, you will be savagely attacked by the opposition’s pit bull.

That pit bull is no other than the Kaieteur News and it has been carefully nurtured by its handlers. Let’s take for example their carefully crafted obsession with Bai Shan Lin, the Chinese logging company being currently savaged by the pit bull. It is clear that there is a specific agenda, as the voices of all other stakeholders whose views run counter to that being promoted by the newspaper are ignored. When they cannot ignore them as in the case of the Guyana Forestry Commission press conference, they look for the minutest segment of a 2-hour long session which they can use to further their misinformation campaign and ignore everything else. This is not journalism; this is gradually descending into the Hitler brand propaganda and who else to lead this dark cause than the oppositions’ local Joseph Goebbels. Far from being the only example, we have hundreds of citizens who have come forward to provide information on how their lives have improved since the introduction of this latest foreign investor in the timber industry. They have been largely ignored by the pit bull, which is content on providing coverage for Royston King and his ECHO group, parading around the place picketing against the Chinese company and feigning concern for the health of our forestry sector, when it is clear that they are completely ignorant of the process which governs it to ensure harvesting is done in a sustainable manner. Rather than picketing Bai Shan Lin, Royston King should be picketing himself, Mayor Hamilton Green and company for the state they have reduced Georgetown to but that is a completely different issue. We now have to ask why this deliberate attempt to ignore the positive and progressive stories of so many citizens, who are not hiding behind the scenes and pulling the strings as, appears to be the case with those behind this attack on the Chinese company. Rather, these people have left their homes and places of work in our forests and journeyed to Georgetown, so the nation will know the truth. The nation will know that their lives are improving because of this foreign investment, that employment opportunities are being expanded and the money they make, is being ploughed right back into our economy and that the demands of these small loggers are increasingly creating new economic opportunities for other citizens. This is the continuing success story of our country, whereby hundreds of people who would have been otherwise unemployed or struggling to put food on the table are now gainfully employed in the forestry sector in a traditional opposition support base of Region 10. We are told by them that Kwakwani is slowly becoming an economic hub once again; that the benefits are increasingly being felt in Linden etc. and this is what has apparently spooked the opposition. For when their supporters have economic independence, they are of the opinion that they will lose their monopoly on influence which enjoyed for several decades. To counter this threat to their traditional support base, they had to let loose the pit-bull. After all, this is what it was specially bred for. Closing Bai Shan Lin, will obviously mean cutting the economic independence of these small loggers and their communities and it is the hope that these citizens will fall right back into the lap of the opposition. So if they are successful with their campaign, the hundreds of small and medium scale loggers in Region 10 will be added to the opposition ‘collateral damage’ list.

Baishanlin is a subsidiary of Jailin which is a Chinese government enterprise called the Chinese forestry group. It is one of four companies set up by the Chinese government solely to source raw lumber.

China Jilin Forest Industry Group Co., Ltd. is one of the first batch of national 57 large-sized pilot enterprise groups established with the approval of three ministries and departments of the State in 1994,

These companies have been responsible for much of the destruction of the worlds forests and wildlife. They are not saints. Prudence at what they do is necessary.

A report examining the extent and impacts of China’s voracious consumption of timber, featuring several case studies from countries whose forests are being severely depleted, and calling on the Chinese Government to act swiftly and decisively in strengthening its enforcement and ensuring illegal timber is barred from its markets.

They attach themselves to weak greedy governments like the PPP and work their will with the environment.

Let me reiterate; investment is when one spends money to increase the worth of something in the society by producing some product of value. The "Investment" here is the spending to pillage our forests.

There are other serious side effects  ( PDF file download) of these companies logging. They bring the Chinese gangs who ruin local trade. Ask the Guyanese small business men what they see happening to them

The Chinese Timber trade is rife with corruption. Every conservation and environmental group on the planet warns against doing business with these companies.

What is unfolding in Guyana is a premonition of things to come. They have already begun to flout the laws as is their habit. They do this because the government allows it .They pay no taxes and can import anything duty free These things do not happen unless there is greasing of palms going on....and that is what they do

Who granted those multi-million$$$ duty free concessions to Bai Shan Lin?

AUGUST 21, 2014 | BY  | FILED UNDER NEWS

GFC says ask GRA; GRA refers questions to GO-Invest; GO-Invest has no applications

Questions are continuing over hundreds of vehicles and scores of heavy duty equipment shipped in by an under-fire

Chinese logging firm, but little answers have been forthcoming about who gave the okay.
The vehicles, which included luxury rides like the high-end Lexus and an Infiniti Q series Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), reportedly came into the country over the last few years. This is before the business plans of the Chinese company, Bai Shan Lin, had even been approved for two forest concessions.
The applications are still pending.
Commissioner James Singh of the Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC) during a press conference on Monday referred all questions regarding duty free concessions for vehicles and pertaining to that company to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
Based on questions sent Tuesday, GRA’s Commissioner General Khurshid General yesterday said that regulations bar his agency from divulging details of transactions to the public.
He insisted that GRA would only transact business based on paper work properly submitted that authorizes the granting of the duty free concessions.
In the case of duty free concessions in this case, GRA would have acted only if the necessary paper-work recommending the concessions were forwarded by agencies like the Guyana Office For Investment (GO-Invest).
Bai Shan Lin in one of its many paid advertisements recently in Kaieteur News and Stabroek News to defend its operations in Guyana, said that in 2008, it applied to the “Government of Guyana through the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest) and other agencies to lease lands to set up a factory to process logs and engage in value added production, such as the making of furniture, craft and hard wood flooring.”
Questions
Since issuing this statement, several opposition members have said that GO-Invest should

publically state its role with the said company and why it has failed as the government’s main investment agency to monitor how Guyana is benefitting from the deals struck with the company and the government.
When contacted earlier this week, Keith Burrowes, CEO of GO-invest, declined to release any information.
Burrowes told this publication, “I prefer not to comment on your questions on Bai Shan Lin and considering that only recently I was appointed the CEO of this company, I can assure that I will look into it.”
However, after being apprised of these comments, some opposition members said that the CEO’s response only leaves one to wonder as to why he could not answer simple questions about the company’s role regarding Bai Shan Lin.
Burrowes’ statements does little to quell mounting concerns that Bai Shan Lin never went to GO-Invest for any investment deal that involves interest in logging or any related activity as it claimed in its advertisement.

under the microscope following revelations that they have been granted significant concessions which allowed them to conduct large scale logging. However, there is little evidence that the administration through its regulatory agencies like GFC followed up to ensure requirements that called on the investors to set up value-added processing facilities.
In the case of the duty free concessions and Bai Shan Lin, the company had been granted concessions in Region Six and Nine and is awaiting permission to start large scale logging.
It is the norm that shipments of duty free vehicles can only be made after the business plan by an investor is green-lighted.
Industry experts say that the situation is a highly unusual one.
GFC Refute
Meanwhile, GFC in a Government statement yesterday refuted a story by Kaieteur News which centered on contradicted claims by the body that no logging activities are taking place in Kwebana, a forestry concession in Region One that Bai Shan Lin is operating in a joint venture arrangement.
According to Commissioner James Singh, Kaieteur News’ report was “yet another misrepresentation”.
The newspaper published photographs of trucks bearing Bai Shan Lin’s logo moving lumber out of the Region One community.
“According to Commissioner Singh, the Commission has checked the seal on the logs and has since verified that the seal was issued in 2013 and the logs harvested in 2013. The Commissioner also stated that the logs being moved out of the area are logs that were harvested and tagged since 2013.”
Singh, according to the Government statement yesterday, said that the Kwebana Production Inc. submitted its annual plan of operation for 2014 to the Commission, but the document has some deficiencies, hence, there has been no actual logging or harvesting on the Kwebana concession area of 87,361 hectares, which is under the control of Bai Shan Lin.
However, persons close to the industry refuted the Commissioner’s claims yesterday saying that the logs in the photos would have been much different in appearance had they been cut in 2013. “These logs appear fresh. Not eight months old. What this would suggest is that Bai Shan Lin has a bag of last year’s tags. Of course the truth would only be known if a separate entity was in charge of log tags — as happens in many other countries.”

There is a reason for that. Apparently, the type and amount of ink that they use appears to be a great batty cleaning agent.

KN is just toilet paper. President Rammo should immediately move to close down the Toilet Paper.

I see where you coming from. You want people only to be able to get their toilet paper from the Chronicle. Typical PPP habit of cornering the market for their friends.

Rammo has the executive power to close down the Toilet Paper and should do so immediately.

Toilet paper is made from wood pulp. So it isn't too difficult to see why you would want to stop the locals from gaining access to toilet paper. Bai Shan Lin has loads of wood chippings to slel back to us as toilet paper.

To the contrary; there is nothing to writing well. There is nothing "
fancy" about it. Most can if they try. However, to write with some believability and with a pleasing cadence one must be presenting something in an easily understood context so what is said matches what the reader knows.

Above, I stated what are the facts with specific substantiation via links to world renown organization concerned with global rainforest environments. They have no political axe to grind with the PPP; they are about the science and the greater good for the planet.

Unlike the recondite PPP with layers of opacity to their forest management strategy, what they say is easily understood and transparent and they attach statistics, ascribe value and show us through examples who we are dealing with. I am contrasting known information sources with the politically corrupt dubious sources of the PPP.

If your peanut head can deduce truly what goebbels did you will see who is the one with bullshit defense of crooks as their message.

He would be stoned out of office.  The international backlash ( not to mention local backlash) would drive the PPP from office. You are a nutcase. Press freedom is a holy grail of democracy. If the PPP want to counter the messages from KN they can of course use the various laws to address misinformation. They are already using or misusing  the nations news agencies which the co opt unto themselves as their main  propaganda machine to counter KN daily.
