NEW YORK, United States, Tuesday April 16, 2013 - New York  police said that a Vincentian-born police officer shot dead her Guyanese-born  boyfriend and their one-year-old baby then committed suicide.

Police said that Rosette Samuel, 43, who was off-duty at the time, shot and  killed Dason Peters on Monday in their East Flatbush, Brooklyn apartment.

The 13-year New York Police Department (NYPD) veteran then went into the  bedroom and killed the baby with a single bullet to his chest, before taking her  own life, the police added.

The police said they found the deadly weapon by her side and that there were  no signs of any struggle inside the apartment.

The NYPD said Samuel had moved to the 108th Police Precinct in Queens two  months ago after working for a number of years at the Manhattan Traffic  Division.

Police said the sole survivor in the bloody horror was Samuel’s 19-year-old  son from a previous relationship, Dondre Samuel.

He told police investigators that he heard a β€œpop pop” sound as his mother got ready for work, and that she had been arguing all night with Peters, while walking around with the gun.

Police said Dondre escaped the bloodbath by climbing through a second-story  window as shots rang out in the quiet Caribbean neighbourhood.

Just before the tragedy, police said Samuel had called the 108th Precinct,  stating that she would be late for work. (CMC)

A woman identified by neighbors as the mother of Dason Peters, who was shot to death Monday in Brooklyn, is held by a police officer near the scene of the incident. After hearing about the killings, she cried: 'My son is my everything.

An off-duty New York Police Department officer apparently shot and killed her 1-year-old son and the boy's father before fatally shooting herself inside her apartment in Brooklyn on Monday morning, a law-enforcement official said.

Police officers responding to the scene on East 56th Street in the Flatbush neighborhood found Rosette Samuel, 43 years old, inside a bedroom of the ground-floor apartment at about 8:30 a.m., the official said, with her young son by her side on a bed. Both Ms. Samuel and the baby, identified as Dylan Samuel-Peters, were dead when the police arrived, the official said.

The father of the boy, who was identified as 33-year-old Dason Peters, was found shot to death in a hallway in the apartment.

According to the official, Ms. Samuel's 19-year-old son from a previous relationship was able to escape the apartment through a window and encountered police officers as they responded to the scene.

The teenager, Dondre Samuel, later told investigators that he called 911 after he saw his mother standing in the apartment and holding a gun as Mr. Peters sat on the floor, the official said.

The window from which Dondre Samuel jumped to escape.

Mr. Samuel told police that during a brief exchange, his mother apologized to him and said she left a letter behind for him, the official said.

Then his mother and Mr. Peters ordered him into his room, after which he heard a gunshot, the official said. Mr. Samuel then fled the apartment. Ms. Samuel's mother was also in the house at the time of the shooting, an official said.

A note was found by investigators in a purse inside the apartment, in which Ms. Samuel apparently wrote that she was sorry for her actions and that she had $42,000 in a retirement account that she wanted her older son to use to attend college, the official said.

According to the official, there was little sign of trouble in Ms. Samuel's life at work.

The official said Ms. Samuel had been an officer since September 2000 and was assigned to the 108th Precinct in Queens. She had no history of shooting her weapon on duty and was in good standing within the department.

The official also said that there was no record that police had been called to the home shared by Ms. Samuel and Mr. Peters.

But Mr. Samuel told detectives that his mother and Mr. Peters had an argument on Saturday over a hand written letter that his mother had received, the official said.

The contents of that letter weren't known. The letter had been torn up and flushed down a toilet in the home, Mr. Samuel told investigators, according to the official.

Friends and relatives of the couple were shaken by the sudden violence.

They described Mr. Peters as a loving father who took his young son swimming and was scheduled to travel to his native Guyana on Monday.

Mr. Peters's mother was inconsolable after learning of her son's death, crying: "My son is my everything."

Relatives said the couple tended to be private about their relationship but had never displayed signs of trouble.

Renee Bernard, 20, a neighbor and friend of Mr. Samuel, said she saw him early Monday morning skateboarding in the neighborhood. "It's good he got out. It's really crazy," she said, adding of Ms. Samuel, "His mom was a little serious…but I never thought she'd do that."

Sharin Gomez, 43, a friend of Ms. Samuel for more than a decade, said she was shocked by what transpired.

"She was very outgoing, loved her immediate family, loved her children," she said. "I just can't think [what happened]. We don't know. She never said anything."

The NYPD cop who shot dead her boyfriend, their 1-year-old son and herself was furious about his plans to travel to Guyana to buy land, police sources and family said.

β€œThe government gives away land. He was going to look and see if he could get a piece of land,” said victim Dason Peters’ dad, Colburn Peters, 57.

Dason Peters had his bags packed when he was killed by Rosette Samuel, 43, at about 8:30 a.m. Monday.

The bags are still in his bedroom.

The elder Peters said Samuel, 43, remained a stranger to him and his wife although Samuel would drop off their grandson, Dylan, every day at their home in Flatlands, Brooklyn.

β€œWe had no contact. If she has to go to work, she leaves the kid here. She comes back from work, she picks up the kid. That’s all our interaction,” Dylan’s grandfather said.

The horrific killings came three months after Samuel, who was assigned to the 108th Precinct in Queens, was docked 20 vacation days for failing to show up for traffic court.

New Yorkers are becoming tense each day based on decisions making as we learn from this story. Three lives lost and two families are grieving. Police officer are humans too and can be stressed out and do the unthinkable. There is NO win, win situation here. We should all take lesson from these situations.
