News Americas, NEW YORK, NY, Mon. July 2, 2018: A 66-year-old Caribbean-born man, who was serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2010 on terror charges, has passed away in a New York prison.
Abdul Kadir, the former Guyana-born parliamentarian, was convicted for plotting along with four others to blow up fuel tanks at the John F Kennedy Airport. He died on June 28, 2018.
Kadir was sentenced by a US court to life while his co-conspirator and fellow Guyanese, Abdel Nur was sentenced to 15 years.
Kadir, had maintained his innocence and testified that he was not involved in the terrorism scheme but had feigned interest in the hopes its architects would help him raise money to build a mosque in Guyana.
From 2001 to 2006, he had served as a regional Member of Parliament for the then opposition Peoples National Congress Reform, (PNCR). He had also previously served as mayor of Linden from 1994 to 1996.
Kareem Ibrahim, who was also charged and convicted in the same plot, died in a US prison in 2016 at the age of 70. Russell Defreitas, who was also convicted in the JFK airport bomb plot remains in prison on a life sentence. He is currently at a high-level prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Nur is currently at a medium security prison in Beaver, West Virginia and is set for release in 2020.
