Guyanese man fatally shot outside New Jersey night Club.
NEWARK: A former minibus driver from Guyana was gunned down early Friday morning in New Jersey.
Authorities have identified the dead man as Guyanese Philip Amsterdam, 49, as the victim in
the fatal shooting on Madison Avenue.
His body was found just outside a night club during an investigation which began early Friday morning, when Amsterdam was found by authorities near the social club suffering an apparent gunshot wound.
Amsterdam was pronounced dead on Friday after being transported to a nearby hospital for treatment, said Essex County Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Katherine Carter.
The release comes on the heels of an early morning police raid of the after-hours social club near where authorities found Amsterdam wounded.
At 3 a.m. Saturday, several Newark Police Department officers entered the social club, appearing to shut the venue down. Officers could be seen moving in and out of the building — a blue residential structure located in the 300 block of Madison Avenue — while people who appeared to be patrons exited.
Attempts to obtain comment from the exiting patrons were unsuccessful.
Police officials did not immediately disclose a purpose for the raid, or say whether any arrests were made. It is also unclear if the raid is at all connected to an Essex County Prosecutor’s Office investigation into Amsterdam’s killing. (ww.nj.com)
