Guyana's President Donald Ramotar and Foreign Minister Carolyn Rogrigues were on hand yesterday at the Marriot on Lexington & 50 St in Manhattan at the launch of the GuydProject.int initiative to formalize a sort of market for Guyanese in the Diaspora with skills and capital to match needs in Guyana.

On several fronts the government of Guyana is looking to take advantage of the large number of people of Guyanese origin living abroad. This body of Guyanese in the Diaspora originated in adversity (the 70s migration due to a dismantling of democratically norms and institutions under Burnham), and now is seen as an opportunity (market, skills, investment capital).
This marriage happens on some level as the number of Guyanese who have matured, built a nest egg and wants to retire in their country of birth. This project is meant to formalize this trend in a structured way. The Ambassador of the IOM (International Organization of Migration described remittances of $600 billion annually by all migrants (population) of over 200 million) as being the 6th largest GDP in the world. This represents opportunities of or marrying skill sets and investment capital of benefit to the country and the diaspora. Already Guyana has a tourism initiative with events of several attractions on the Guyanese calendar.
