When the government said we should build Guyana together, it means we should be able to criticize and make recommendation on failed projects like GUYSUCO that seen better days in decades. Guysuco is crippled under its State owned operation and continue to spiral out of control. What do you think the government should do with the sugar industry at this stage?

Voice your opinions and let the government know what you think!

1. Privatise it?

2. Leave it under State control?

3. Private/Public Partnership?

I am absolutely against privatizing Guysuco.  The struggle of the workers for the rights that they have today has been too immense.  To return the workers to a situation where their very lives were at the mercy of the owners, which they had in the pass, is an act of treason.

The corporation needs to go into new areas both agricultural and non agricultural that are needed in Guyana, the Caribbean and the Guyanese diaspora.

Whatever the government decides to do with GuySuCo, it must take into account the views of the thousands-strong workforce. I think the sugar workers' union, GAWU, is not in favour of privatization.

GAWU President Komal Chand and General Secretary Seepaul Narine have made educated suggestions on what must be done to return GuySuCo to a viable position.

The government cannot afford to ignore Chand and Narine.

I am not up to speed on what the Union is recommending. Could you wish to share that recommendation ?

Privitization is the best answer for a troubled industry, unless you have a better idea. May I also add that Raj Singh must go.

yuji22, I'm sorry, I don't file these things. I read the news and let my memory work.

What I've found off the bat is this report, published in Guyana Times two months ago, in which Komal Chand revealed GuySuCo didn't consult GAWU and NAACIE on its new plan.

I do share the view that the Union should be consulted. At the end of the day, the failure of Guysuco happen under the PPP and they should hold full responsibility. The industry is going through tough times. The world bank noted that St. Kitts suffered the same fate with the sugar industry.

Guysuco needs a new Board of Directors. Political appointees are a bad for any government run entity and Raj Singh must go. That is a harsh reality of the corporate world since he failed to deliver.

The opposition must be consulted during this process. The PPP has indicated that they will chart a new course for 2014. I hope that they follow up and and deliver on that promise.

Guyana will be far better off if we are constructive about what the government does.  The PPP must listen to all sides and finally make the right decision regarding Guysuco.
