Guysuco plans to meet demands in 2013 – CEO Paul Bhim

The Guyana Sugar Corporation (Guysuco) says it is committed to ensuring that workers needs are met in the coming year.

Chief Executive Officer of Guysuco; Paul Bhim, stated that this will decrease the significant amount of strike actions that affected the industry in 2012, and boost production.

In terms of pricing disputes, Bhim stated that the corporation will hold more discussions with workers to negotiate payments.

“There’s a lot of haggling there in the cane fields as to what price would be paid for harvesting canes on that day…. There is a standard, but if there is any sort of vines of weeds in the fields, we have to pay extra… most of the strikes we’ve had come from that scenario”

Guysuco had 164 strikes in 2012, resulting in a significant amount of man-days lost, for the first crop. The corporation says 7,500  tonnes of sugar could have been produced.
